Poetry - Super Escape
|
|
By Rich Mills
Inject the god that makes me whole.
That's why I need a drug that hugs my soul.
Brief clarity before dirty wind drags me all about.
Mind now numb no longer able to dictate a verbal doubt.
Perpetuate the cycle of drugs debt and depression.
Quit today, stop tomorrow, take a life on

Poetry - "Chemical Love" and "Digit-ull Shitty"
|
|
By Rich Mills
I double dropped before I went in,
Being searched by the doorman put my head-in-a-spin.
I pays me money and am through the door,
Head starts to bob, soon drawn to the dance-floor.
Then through throbbing heart and a tribal beat,
Two pairs of dilated rolling eyes briefly meet.

Poetry - "Needle Whore" and "Divorce Number 2"
|
|
By Rich Mills
Down the corridor and through the door,
There lives nothing more than a needle whore.
All his pathetic rock-star dreams,
Are slowly coming apart at the seams.
With song lyrics full of false metaphor,
He's a one-man psychological war.

Poetry - A Spare Five Minutes
|
|
By Rich Mills
With a spare five minutes
I scribble these ramblings down.
Between herding the kids
And taking over the world.
I find a spare five minutes
It was just lying here on the ground.

A balmy summer's evening, and hundreds of specially invited guests make their way to the new KC Stadium. A guest as part of the Hull Asylum Seekers Support Group contingent, I witnessed an evening of award giving and hearty backslapping.

Articles - HULL #1 - Hull gets flashed!
|
|
By Rich Mills
Instructions had gone out and it was all in the lap of the god's. The Hull Flash Crowd came out from behind their computer screens and faced the world and each other for the first time. The location was Victoria Square, the time 1:00pm, the act was the Hokey-Cokey.

Articles - If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next
(How Hull helped the children of Spain.) By Rich Mills
|
|
In May 1937 the Spanish liner Habana left Bilbao in Spain, on-board were 4,200 Basque children being brought to the safety of the UK.
The Spanish Civil War had started on July 17th 1936, and the world stood by and watched in horror as innocents were slaughtered.
Some however took it upon themselves to do something about the blood-shed.

Articles - Blood On The Streets, Blood On Our Hands By Rich Mills
|
|
By Rich Mills
This is an after thought, an addition to the previous piece. An after thought! That is a problem some of my friends are having at the moment. And somewhere out there in Hull, there are some people with thoughts of what they have done weighing heavily on their consciences, or so I hope.

(Diversity In The City Of Hull)
By Rich Mills
When I started thinking about this piece, I was originally just going to write about the evening out I had on Saturday (July 19th). I and others around me experienced the cultural diversity that Hull has to offer. A Zulu wedding, a Salsa Night in aid of Deaf Children, Déjà Vu at The Welly, my diverse bunch of mates.

Drugs - Hull Top 10 Drugs Hell?! by Rich Mills
|
|
In an Observer article of Sunday 12th May 2002, Hull was described as "Britain's new drug capital". Another 'TOP 10' status for us not to be proud of!
It sometimes feels like we should just give-up and walk away from this city that seems day-by-day to be going further down the toilet.
So why do we bother, why do people like myself battle day-after-day to reverse this trend?
Why do we go out on the streets putting our lives at risk for the sake of the apathetic masses that sit at home watching the TV, moaning about the state of the world outside?

Fiction - It's Like The Bloody Inquisition! By Rich Mills
|
|
by Rich Mills
He couldn't understand why someone would do such a thing! It definitely seemed however, that somewhere someone must have told someone else something about him. Something that wasn't really anyone else's concern. Then again interfering in the lives of others was a deeply annoying trait we were all guilt of.

During those pre-teen days of dramatic sexual awakenings, Roy always strived and usually achieved, a brief respite of self-indulgent escapism. By scraping together un-spent bus fares and school dinner money he'd often have enough to visit the local cinema most weeks.

Fiction - Chants From The Graveside By Rich Mills
|
|
by Rich Mills
There is some old saying about 'idle hands' and doing the Devils work, or some such thing. The assumption then could be that 'idle words' spoken must be those of the Devil also. If in no more a way than an un-reasoned babble is nothing but a distracting noise. A siren song designed to send us off course.

Fiction - 100 Words Competition - The Graveyard Shift By Rich Mills

The taxi office is beige with nicotine and age.
Battling with the Sandman, my weapons of choice, cigarettes and coffee, dispensed from the
whirring-gurgling coffee machine. Of things I've done for money this is the lowest.
Six calls all night, only TV to numb the brain. Cups, and corners filled with cigarette butts.
I wait for the dawn.
Then my replacement comes on,

His mind was just blank, blank, blank.

Fiction - Welcome To Hellville - Part 16 By Rich Mills

"What music are you into, man?" The American exchange student who had earlier introduced
himself, without any regard for Alan's need to be alone, suddenly threw a curve-ball
of a question like this in his direction.
"Well I listen to..." What followed was a definitive list of bands from Alan's
wide-ranging rare vinyl and CD collection, he even

Schedule was a bad choice of word as they'd never been organised enough to

Everyone else thought that their apparent external serenity was
one of infinite calm. However, this was

Through the large glass double doors I could see a number of other residents. All were transfixed by the pretty flashing lights emanating from the box in the corner, but I knew they were all fully aware of Laura and I approaching. We stood for a moment watching the specimens through the glass, briefly examining their static behaviour as they gave nothing away except a sense of loss.

Fiction - Welcome To Hellville - Part 14 By Rich Mills

Remember, remember the fifth of November. Alan smiled to himself, he felt she'd smile back. As with all days leading up to any Bonfire Night he could ever remember, the gods were restless. A storm in a D-cup had met her PR-effect match, and the media for mindless meat-eaters was polishing off the shit-dish, like the ginger tom who'd

Waiting in A&E. Too much time spent sitting, waiting, hour upon hour. I wanted to get up and leave so many times, but I knew that I had to stay and keep waiting. For all our sakes! The intensity of the situation made my head ache, but I breathed through it and sunk my head into my hands, still waiting.
Among the drawn-out periods of waiting there were breaks,

Expressing the experience of being here in Thailand is difficult to put into words.
The sensorial experience is so mind blowing that you begin to feel overloaded.

Articles - Ten Foot Titans By Rich Mills

Long summer Sundays when I was a kid were spent running around,
plastic machine gun gripped tightly in my hands, throwing myself onto
the hot concrete as imagined bullets flew overhead. Rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat.
Andy came running full pelt down the ten-foot, Uzi tucked close to his side,
spraying invisible hot lead along the side of Brown Owl's fence.
Jamie bursts out of his back

short for Patricia. However Pat was also the name of his former college lecturer,

I fell asleep at some point I think, had this sharply vivid dream.

Going Down - Make Poverty History Demonstration in Edinburgh 2nd July 2005 by Rich Mills

Having been a political activist for many years now, when the Make Poverty History
demonstration came around, we just had to do something about it.
The result being that with a lot of work from Martin Deane collecting money in,
we managed to send a hundred people up to Edinburgh for the day.
Along with another hundred or so who made their own way up to Scotland, Hull was well represented.
