Music Reviews - 27th June Shindigg Le Shed Franks and Khi at Piper Club By Michelle Dee with photo gallery
Tonight was a break from the norm, Piper on a Tuesday instead of the Sesh? My step-dad once said enough is as good as a feast and a change is as good as a rest. He also had things to say about fruit machines, one-legged men in arse kicking competitions and matchboxes, but they aren't particularly relevant here. So there we were, Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 2nd June 06 - Outspoken Silence Jack Knife and Screaming Sorrow at The Ringside By Michelle Dee Photographs By Mo
In the last month I have spoken about trying to publicise different genres on thisisull.com so to this end I accepted the invitation from Outspoken Silence to the half term gig at The Ringside on Beverley Rd. First off I am not versed in the intricacies of the Emo genre, nor do I have any real knowledge about the subculture built around the Emo bands. But I can simply Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 25th May06 - iLiKETRAiNS, Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames and The Minor Fall at Piper Club By Michelle Dee Photographs By David Robinson
Tonight was the night that Leeds came to Hull problem was not many turned up for the welcoming party. Sure enough Piper Club on Newland Avenue was peopled with a number of discerning music fans ready to witness the fine selection of bands chosen by the Silver Star/Raw Talent partnership. It also played host to a bunch of students who sounded like they were Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 1st June 06 - The Johnsons, Unless, The Everydays and special guests from Japan The Warm at The Adelphi By Michelle Dee Photographs By Mo
Thursday night saw four different live music acts playing the De Grey Street venue. The night was organised by Matt from The Johnsons and new management team Silver Star Media fronted by Gareth Jones. Their night was once again up against some fairly stiff competition in the form of The Paddingtons who were playing Staks Café Bar fifty Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 25th May 06 - The Beautiful South at The City Hall with support from Aberfeldy By Michelle Dee Photographs by Matt Rudd
Yesterday was a very special day. Around five o'clock on Thursday evening, I was listening to The Beautiful South sound check. The hall was a hive of activity with technicians climbing rope ladders to the gantries, erecting barriers at the front of the hall, and making ready for the first TBS gig at the city centre venue for over 16 years. I listened to the band running Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 19th April 06 - The Peasants, The Blackouts and The Landaus at Quayside Quintessential Sessions By Michelle Dee
It was only a week ago when I met The Peasants for the first time but I had heard them being played by Alan on Raw Talent a month or two back. Also Steve Rudd had reviewed their CD on this site and as often happens round these parts I had been bumping into Jody, singer for The Peasants, regularly on the Avenues. Tonight, I was determined to see them. Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 12th April 06 - Tarifa at Quayside Quintessential Sessions By Michelle Dee
I have known of Tarifa since they opened the Renegade Writers Live Event at Ringside last year. Since then they have been hard at work practicing, writing and strengthening the ties within the band. Tarifa recently played at Music Man but tonight was the first time I'd seen them since last year. After a delayed start (they didn't take Read more...

Music Reviews - Sunday Sesh 2nd April By Michelle Dee
To kick things off we had a few numbers from Mr. Baggott. He started with a new one I didn't catch the title then his usual Blur cover. The popular Turismo tune Skegness came next which went down well with the knowledgeable crowd. One person I think it was Rich Turismo was even heard to exclaim Amazing. He finished off with In Bed Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 2nd March - HULLucinations Launch at Silhouette - Dirty Dreamers, 10,000 Things, Your Vegas and The Johnsons By Michelle Dee Gallery by Darren Rogers
Tonight was the first night of the latest live music night to hit Hull. Organised by a team of dedicated music fanatics and not shadowy, uncaring corporate faces Hullucinations promised a top night of quality musical entertainment. Paul and Dave the men behind the project had used all tools at their disposal to start advertising the night well in advance. Along with the usual flyers and posters, they had a half Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 31st January 06 - The Sesh featuring Kill Surf City, Rednite Strip, The Chase and John Copley By Michelle Dee Photographs by Darren Rogers
Last night I made my way down Princes Ave towards Linnet and Lark and a night of live music that promised to be rather good. By the time I arrived the newly refurbished hostelry was filling up quicker than the 5.30 tube from Fenchurch Street. After a few local demos, including a noteworthy new one from GST Cardinals called Dirty little, The Chase took to the stage. They had had to Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 25th February 06 - Dirty Dreamers, Viper 88s, They Died Too Young, When Saturn Returns and Cat - Islington Lark In The Park By Michelle Dee
A small crowd gathered outside Debenhams, the usual meeting point for these band jaunts, on a chill Saturday morning. Some were carrying an array of provisions for the long journey to the capital. Our group was made up of Danny, Matt, and John Paul from The Johnsons, Me, Jo and Rachel, Uncle Dave and Paul from the Hullucinations team, Begbie, Ash Dreamer, Darren and David. Read more...

Articles - The Thames Whale By Michelle Dee
Sometime on Friday 20th January a bottle nosed whale was spotted in the Thames River. This unusual event caused quite a stir in the capital later that day the 18ft whale tried to beach itself in the shallow waters by Westminster Bridge. Volunteers and specialists alike tried to encourage the whale back the way it came into the deeper parts of the river. On the Saturday it was thought to have gone back towards the mouth Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 23rd February 06 - Fado Rock at Adelphi By Michelle Dee
On a strange winter's night I decided to drop in to Adelphi on De Grey Street in the hope of finding some good live music. What I found was an eclectic mix of musicians and bands. As I walked in I found, much to my disappointment, that I'd missed Ade Webb. He is a rather talented singer song writer whose soothing album has calmed my nerves from time to time after a long day. Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 15th February 06 - Dazed Dakotas Double Up at Ringside By Michelle Dee
Due to some late cancellations the Dazed Dakotas were left without supporting acts tonight. However, rather than worrying about it they turned the situation very much to their advantage deciding to play not one but two very different sets. The first was a selection of the songs played at the Sesh the previous night, including the confessional Drugs Read more...

Album Reviews - Vib Gyor Five track EP By Michelle Dee
The chiming keyboards and guitars opens Fallen followed by a soft breathy vocal then, as the song continues it takes on a definite Bono sound. As the guitar quickens, you find yourself exploring a fresh wind swept arena. Quiet, quick passionate wavy lines of guitar underpinned with urgent drumbeats, floating falling into deep wells of white noise. Plaintive pianos will oft be Read more...

Music, Band News - Unless; The Story So Far By Michelle Dee
If you have been listening to some of the John Peel tribute programming you may have heard this band from Grimsby being played a number of times. He was quietly making positive noises about them before he sadly passed away. They are a punk-rock four piece that have been together for a number of years and are in the process of recording their third Read more...

Music Reviews - 14th February 06 - Valentines Sesh Dazed Dakotas By Michelle Dee
Tuesday night after running around like a blue-arsed fly I finally got to the Sesh. As ever, it was packed from the doors to the bar and getting from one to the other was going to prove problematic. Drink in hand I steered my way over to the right-hand side of the tiny stage and caught up with tonight's headliners SideWinder. Also on the bill were Tonik and new Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 12th February - The Modern at Sweet N Sour and gallery from Hull University 18th September 2005 by Michelle Dee
Tonight saw two very different bands playing Hull. First was the hard fast rock n roll chant fest of The Strokes at the city hall, second was the electro disco sounds of Mercury signed London band The Modern. I never got to the former but I heard mixed reports about the gig. Many said it was amazing and commented on an incredible light show, whilst others said Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 1st February 06 - Silver Star at Piper featuring City Ghosts, Kill Surf City, The Morphines, Thief and Black Dog Sunday By Michelle Dee
As I sit here four weeks into my three month ban from Hull's premier live music venue, I can't help wondering why I am about to write yet another of my reviews. Is it to justify the wavering of the usual door charge? Is it because I told the bands in good faith that I would? Is it the fact that one day I hope someone of significance will finally recognise my genuine passion for Read more...

Music Reviews - Foot Loose at The Adelphi By Michelle Dee
As the lights go down in and the club fills up, relatively new band Foot Loose take to the hallowed stage. The four-piece play a pleasing blend of U.S. styled popular rock. They have that unmistakable jangly guitar sound which is put to good use on song Rise and Fall. Front man has command over his voice displaying a good range and a good set of lungs. Read more...

Music Reviews - The Chase, GST Cardinals and The Blackouts at the Under The Influence Xmas Show at The Adelphi - Sat 17th Dec 05 By Michelle Dee The Chase gallery by Michelle Honess
Under The Influence celebrated its Christmas bash down at the Adelphi with a line up of rather new Hull bands them being, GST Cardinals, The Blackouts and The Chase. The billed act, !Forward Russia! sadly cancelled so promoter Dean Shakespeare had to make a few fast decisions to insure the show went on. He called upon good friends GST Cardinals to open with a very welcome Read more...

Music Reviews - Monday 4th April 05 - Musicians Night at the Adelphi By Michelle Dee
First up was Ruth Stalker. I was very interested to see whether she had grown in confidence since appearing at the Access To Music event last month. She has played before, at the now famous open mic night at the Adelphi Club, but not in front of such a packed house. It was her birthday so the whole club sang a rousing rendition of Read more...

Album Reviews - Rumpus - EP By Michelle Dee
This offering from Sheffield band Rumpus - features seven varied tracks of atmospheric unusual electro death rock. They have managed to mix up the genres of Indie rock with a shade of electronica and a hefty slab of death metal vocals. This ambitious approach stands up well to scrutiny and has Read more...

Music, Album Reviews - A Certain Type of Person - The Great Bishop Robbery EP II By Michelle Dee
I didn't go out today; instead I reached for the attractively packaged seven- track EP from Sheffield band A Certain Type of Person. They are a folk tinged five-piece with an eye for detail and unusual instrumentation including organs and vibraphones. At times the gentle acoustic sound is reminiscent of our own folk advocates Cowfish albeit with a more gravel laden Levellers style lead vocal. Read more...

Album Reviews - The Vultures Rebel Yelp EP By Michelle Dee
The Vultures still play hard, fast, punky rock n roll. However they appear to have changed since last year which apart from seeing them recently at Ringside with Break Even and Soulflame, I'm sad to say is when I saw them last. The days of playing a twenty song set in ten minutes are behind them, okay slight Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 15th December 05 - Band Wars at The Polar Bear By Michelle Dee
Band Wars 2005 Result is an Insult to Hull Music. You know there's something amiss when you have to explain the presence of your bar staff in one of the bands to reach the final four. The competition was held at Polar Bear, the prize was a £1000. The four bands in the final were Jilly hates Willy Konscience, The Cyclones and The Landaus. There really was no contest or shouldn't have been... Read more...

Music Reviews - Kill Surf City By Michelle Dee
The fresh five-piece from Hull have fast become the band name to drop in any discerning musos discourse. Recent months has seen them leapfrogging the opposition and quickly reaching and surpassing a few significant milestones. The band had barely been together two months when they headlined at the Sesh (see review thisisull.com ) Linnet and Lark. This was quickly followed by more Read more...

Music Reviews - Night Clubs - Friday 2nd December - Regis at Pure Techno at Rhythm Room By Michelle Dee
Friday night in the icy rain I flagged down a cab to town. My preferred late night spot tonight was Rhythm Room on Baker Street for a heady night of uplifting beats. Someone once enquired, What is this rude, lewd, lascivious junk called techno? What, indeed. One way of describing it is like a sonic sunburst Read more...

Music Reviews - Scarborough Beached Festival 2005 Sunday By Michelle Dee Photos by Roland Standaert and Michelle Dee
Sand beneath my feet, sounds of activity on the stage, blue skies overhead, sun blazing: a strange but rather pleasant surrounding for a gig. Amaya Huntly and Jon Neeves had the unenviable task to open the show on Sunday. An acoustician and Keyboard duo; the highlight of their set was the Credence Clearwater Revival cover where they proved with a strong number they can do a Read more...

People - Jim Muir Slideshow By Michelle Dee
It's the packaging that catches the eye first that and the fact you have to slice open the CD envelope with a sharp implement. Due to the popularity of the first EP, I have only the second two before me. The Slideshow are storytellers first and foremost. Jim Muir began writing the songs during 2000 and 2001. He says that he writes to Read more...

Poetry - Someone Else's Songs By Michelle Dee
The kids are all popping pills,
turning mountains in to mole hills.
For a while they smile,
high on a trip through the night
keep going until light.
Sucking up coke
with a blood stained note. So... Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 25th November 05 - Franz Ferdinand at Hull Ice Arena By Michelle Dee
Last night probably the biggest name in recent Indie music touched down in Hull as part of their Europe-wide tour. A tour, which, will see them play thirty-seven dates in sixteen different countries. The tickets were sold out almost as soon as they came on sale, so we knew we were in for a packed gig with plenty of people and a great atmosphere. The Glaswegian multi-award winners sure know Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 4th November 05 - Shinobi featuring Grooverider and MC AOB at The Welly By Michelle Dee - 3 Page Photo Gallery.
Drum n bass creeps up from your feet to your fingaz and puts a smile on everyone's face... I am aware of the genre drum n bass or d n b as it is commonly referred. A good few years ago I stayed by my radio all night to tape the Bristol pioneer Roni Size playing live on air. I watched with interest a docu-road movie on LTJ Bukem and the antics of MC Conrad. The show ended up with the Read more...

Poetry - You gotta you gotta you gotta go to Yo-Yo
By Michelle Dee
Dancing and drinking blackcurrant and ice
Not lager or spirits it doesn't feel right.
Stamped the back of my hand,
at the front door, how could we riot
when our feet won't touch the floor.
Some come to sit alone, in dark shady corners. Read more...
