Chris Dawber
A regular contributor to thisisUll.com since September 2008, Chris Dawber sadly passed away on 13th February 2009 in Dove House Hospice, Hull. His Featured Writers page will be a permanent memorial to him and an acknowledgement of his contribution to the site.

This is Chris' wife, Ann's tribute to him:

Chris lived his life doing just as he pleased. He tried every job imaginable, because he could, because he wanted to experience everything.

He was something of an anomaly; gregarious but also a loner, a gentleman, a lover of words, a poet and a romantic who wasn't afraid to show his feelings.
Woe betide you if he took a dislike to you, though! As he was fond of saying; 'I don't take shit from shitheads'.

Chris enjoyed many things in life but his favourites were a good beer, watching and playing snooker, tennis, boxing (in his younger days. He was quite proud of the fact he had an eight pack!)

He also loved running and took part in the Humber Bridge half marathon many times. His best time, in 1990, at the age of 43 was 38minutes 27 seconds and he was placed 57th, although he was the only one at the start with a ciggie in his mouth; he swore blind it took seconds off his time!

Diagnosed with cancer and given 6 to 9 months to live 20 months ago, Chris stuck two fingers up at it and rarely gave the cancer a thought because he was too busy enjoying his life.

Most of his poetry was written some time ago and, apart from 'The Boxer', he didn't think his poems were very good. He took quite a lot of persuading to submit his poems to the website although, once they were published, he was secretly very pleased that other people had a chance to read them.

Chris will be greatly missed by all the people whose lives he touched, especially his wife, Ann and his two step children, Sara and Joanne.

Poetry - Resting In Peace By Chris Dawber 1947 - 2009
I lay here, beneath the soft, waved, silken soil,
Alive seeing nothing, now dead, seeing all.
I see air, it's blue, it really is,
Why now, for the first time, do I see this?
Contrasting, kaleidoscopic scene,
Only now, that I've gone, knowing where I've been.
Compacted mud and wood can't hide,
The wonders I've perceived, since I've died. Read more...

Poetry - Questions By Chris Dawber
Who is the mother of the sun?
Who is the father of the tide?
Why must we promenade, walk, not run?
And where do redundant Saturday's hide?
Simple questions. Answer them.
Are we who, what where or when? Read more...

Poetry - Not One Of Us? By Chris Dawber
He tramps the streets of shadowed life,
The wrong side of the two edged knife.
No miscreant he, not understood,
No misericorde*, to kiss his blood.
We think we know him, but know him nought,
For can we know the man's distraught.
Past the local, lively chat, Read more...

Poetry - Stained Image By Chris Dawber
Pretty her, pity her, poor girl,
Product of playful mankind,
Wanton, wanting, needing, bleeding,
A virginal slut, maligned,
Who's the instigator? Is there a God?
If there is, is he doing his job?    Read more...

Poetry - Judges Solution By Chris Dawber
Judge and Clerk in chambers,
Before the mornings court,
Behind every crime an addict,
Increases heroin bought.
Each addict becomes a pusher,
Who then makes a hundred more.
The law is losing hands down,    Read more...

Poetry - Here For A Purpose? By Chris Dawber
I'm the Unknown Warrior,
A man, with dubious fame.
I lie here, as a symbol,
But no-one knows my name.
But remember, I was a person,
I lived, I breathed, I swore,
A typical, frightened Tommie,
One more victim of your war.    Read more...

Poetry - The Boxer By Chris Dawber
This is a tale that's hard to tell,
Of a man who won and one who fell,
Fifteen rounds of blood and sweat,
They'll always talk of when they met,
Introducing Jim Vandon,
He's defending champion,
Never known to lose a fight,    Read more...

I was born in the UK, have also lived in Holland, France and Croatia but Hull is home to me in every way. I have just moved to York after a year in Surrey which was awful. I got my degree in French, Italian and Scandinavian Studies at Hull University then an MA by Research from Nottingham in Slavonic Studies, which was basically discussing the differences between Croatian Read more...

Featured Writers - Leah Scarpati
Leah has always been a book worm; her love affair with the written word was first nurtured by her Grandmother from an early age and it continues to this day. Her ambition has always been to be a published writer but after an uneventful chat with the careers advisor at age fourteen, she was told to get herself a proper job. So she's now a wage slave to the civil service but still loves writing. Harlan Coben once told her to 'Just write.' So she does, Read more...

Featured Writers - Mike Watts
An 'Ull lad, born and bred, I was brought up on Orchard Park which seemed to have more 'ups' than 'downs' then and I had a good childhood there. I have been writing for a few years now and usually feel the need to pick up a pen when something rattles me, though it is nice when pure inspiration calls. I spend most of my spare time reading everything to Read more...
