Music Reviews - 28th June 07 Jelly V Club NME South Central (DJ Set) Welly Hull By Michelle Dee Pictures by Kate Langan
Thursday arriving early before all the prom kids arrived we slid into the lounge downstairs at the Welly. Drinks in hand we grooved to the Latino sounds of the Spanish Hustle and kudos to the DJ downstairs for spinning the Junior Jack track featuring The Cure's Robert Smith. As more prom kids came in, ready to party, the sounds Read more...

Music Reviews - Sunday 25th March 07 - The Horrors Plus Kreeps Club NME At The Welly Hull By Michelle Dee Photographs by Kate Langan
Eerie spaced out keyboard intros, skull shaped guitar heads, electric skeleton double bass, flutes saxophones and a Theremin? These are just some of the elements that make up the demented sound of Kreeps. The five piece stateside act, create stylized theatrical rock with multi instrumentation that leaves you open mouthed in admiration. Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 13th March 07 - Towers of London and Dance Bastards at The Welly By Sue Watson Photographs by Kate Langan
The Dance Bastards are not your average band. For a start there are only 2 of them. A female vocalist and a female guitarist, who augmented their offerings with a synthesized backing track to produce an amazingly full sound. The music was both hypnotic and repetitive, like early acid house only slower and less manic. They were a brilliant opening act. Read more...

Welly's packed tonight already as Dance Bastards hit the stage with their refreshing brand of dirty electronic rap with a catchy bass that's to die for. These two gorgeous girls are hypnotising the crowd not only with their sassy moves and wrap around skirts, but with serious attitude from lead singer Kate who positively screams girl power (way overdue!) Music Reviews - Monday 24th March 07 - Enter Shikari at Asylum, Hull University By Becky Martin Photographs by Kate Langan
No-one gives a crap about Your Codename Is: Milo as the crowd are buzzing with electricity because they're itching for Enter Shikari and the mosh pits prepare themselves to mosh the place into the ground with sweaty pent up energy. The lights go out, the screams begin, they chant Shikari! in unison and with all the glow sticks flying around it looks more like an Read more...

Music Reviews - Paparazzi Whore at Club NME at The Welly, Hull By Becky Martin Photographs by Kate Langan
Welly in Hull's been around for a few years and through all the eyeliner, exaggerated hair, skinny jeans and beer soaked t-shirts, it's seen enough emo bands, trashed dressing rooms and drunk indie guys to last a lifetime, but tonight was special as Paparazzi Whore took over the stage and set the place alight! Bass driven??? Man! The speakers made Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday The Sounds and Avangaard at The Welly Club By Becky Martin Photographs by Kate Langan
It's Thursday night at Welly and that can only mean one thing ... yep that's right, cue the emo girls! The buzzing crowd's full of mascara, skinny jeans, even tighter tights, and hair with some serious curling iron action going on, with the odd floating Mohican thrown in too, and it's all for this very special night with The Sounds. All the pain of waxing, painting and Read more...

Music News - Band Biog and Tour Dates The Talks Photographs By Kate Langan
The Talks www.myspace.com/thetalks were formed in June 2006, though it was a culmination of 6 months of writing and recording in Lint's sweaty bedroom. Lint (vocals/guitar) and Jody (guitar/vocals) met at college many years ago and have been touring and recording ever since. Following their progression through a series of other bands (Lint Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 16th December 06 - The Beautiful South and Badly Drawn Boy at The Hallam Arena, Sheffield By Julia Grant Photographs by Kate Langan
The rumours had been circulating for a fair few weeks now that this current tour aka "The GrapplingTour" was to be the band's last ever and Saturday night in Sheffield was the last date of that tour. It all kicked of well with fantastic support from Badly Drawn Boy. There were some familiar tracks but the crowd struggled to get into it as the majority of songs Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 1st December 06 - Neville Staple with The Talks at The Welly Club By Michelle Dee Photographs by Kate Langan
Over the last few months Hull band, The Talks have been making a name for themselves throughout the country. Now already in 2007 they have bookings from January to May. Music Reviews - Tuesday 25th September The Romance She Likes Parties and The So and So's at the Sesh Linnet and Lark Hull By Michelle Dee Photographs by Kate Langan
After a cancellation by local band Hospital Fight Grimsby band the So and So's found themselves down at the Sesh for their Hull debut. After seeing them at the Bridging the Gap Lincoln Gig at Christopher's earlier this year I was looking forward to see them live again. They took to the sesh stage and immediately were beset with problems. First of Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 24th October 06 - The Tender Box, City of Glass and The Talks at The Lamp By Michelle Dee Photographs by Kate Langan
It's hard to pin down The Talks' sound. Their music rides down different streets in a two-tone beaten up Ford Anglia. It's back to the days of bouncy ska and white boy reggae rhythms; knees up numbers with the occasional indie twist, that'll knock you into a pork pie hat. Ring leaders Pat guitar vocals and Joe guitar and backing vocals formed the group in August after a number of Read more...

Music Reviews - 9th 0ctober Monday Nex Above It All and The Clauberg Opera at Ringside Hull By Michelle Dee Photographs by Kate Langan
Having only seen The Clauberg Opera previously in the darkened confines of the Adelphi I found tonight's setting rather strange. The absence of light was replaced with dancing coloured spots and a disco ball. One of the reasons Clauberg took this gig apart from their desire to pick up as many gigs as possible was to try out a shortened version of their set. Read more...

Music Reviews - 2nd October 06 - Soho Dolls Paparazzi Whore and Dance Bastards (debut) at Asylum Hull University By Michelle Dee Photographs by Kate Langan
After hearing on the grapevine about new girls, Dance Bastards and also watching the cutting edge video created on a shoe string I was looking forward to their debut gig. I had checked them out for a few weeks on myspace -watched that stark video a good few times- and had the song Suckerrr firmly implanted in my head. As the girls take Read more...

Music Reviews - Sunday 1st October 06 - Shindigg - Soup at Certificate 18, York By Lyle Tuttle Photographs By Kate Langan
By the time the portentous quip, If I keep myself low I'll never drop is delivered, David Tomlinson is half naked. Fluorescent lighting is unable to penetrate the shadow the brim of an army surplus hat has cast over his eyes, and assuming that those eyes have again glassed over as they had done by this time last week at The Adelphi, we notice that there exists a new Read more...

Music, Bands- Interview with Dance Bastards featuring Kate Wood and Amy Harrison By Michelle Dee Photographs by Kate Langan
With my copy of Kate Millet's Sexual Politics open, I sit down to type the interview just conducted with the hottest, hip-sounding electro/punk/rap group in town. Tonight was the debut of all girl duo Dance Bastards, and the fact that most of you missed it, is just pitiful. These two girls are in their early twenties, never pay full price for anything, and take Read more...

Music Reviews - Sunday 10th September 06 - Fonda 500 at The Mela Festival at Pearson Park By Becky Martin Photographs by Kate Langan
As we slowly made our way to Pearson Park dragging our tired limbs behind us from a drunken night at Spiders, we emerge in the middle of the Hull Mela 06, a celebration of Hull's cultural diversity and acceptance of an alternative lifestyle, with its catchphrase of bring nothing but an open mind. The grassroots-style venue is a huge mixing pot of different cultures, foods, Read more...

Music Reviews - Stop It You're Killing Me, Monkey Boy and Freaks Union at The Adelphi By Becky Martin Photographs by Kate Langan
The crowd's full of teeny-bopper emos and hardcore metal fans tonight in a glorious mixture of piercings, tattoos and spiky mohicans, as Stop It You're Killing Me kick off the rock night with their own brand of heavy guitars, energetic drums, and screechy vocals. The hot female bass player weaves in her own soft vocals towards the end of their set earning them a great reception Read more...
