Interviews - Will Self
Tuesday 17th of June saw the excellent arrival into Hull of the delightful satirical journalist and dryer than arrid anti-perspirant Will Self . The man himself graced around 250 eager punters at the Pave café bar on Princes Avenue at 6.45 p.m.. And guess who was lucky enough to have a prime seat by the stage window with the kronenbourg flowing effortlessly and the company in keep, divine?!.
As he read beautifully from his critically acclaimed new book, Dorian Mr. Self gently hypnotised the crowd into a desert island disc like tranquil state. 40 minutes on and I sat with the distinct feeling that we could have all listened for 40 more.
Questions on contemporary art and Jim Moir followed with jollies from the rest of us and proceeded again with fantastic explanations from the literary God !. As you may have guessed I am an avid fan, so maybe I should apologise for my seemingly biased opinion of this gig now. Sorry.

|
|
At the routine book signing I was again fortunate enough to get my copy of Dorian signed, and I can tell you I was star struck!!! Literally stupid, 'h hhi ' I stammered 'yeah, to Carolyn please and could you personalise it for me?'. He drew a picture of a cheesefootball accompanied by 'will you marry me' in a speech bubble! I felt all weak at the knees to be rather lay, as earlier a comment on cheese footballs made to Will, called for me to express my love for the modified cheese snack to my friend. Bizarrely enough, Will overheard this while taking the question.
|
This led to a complete parody entailing me, marrying a cheese football, Pave occupants being my entourage and suffering a 'lack of satisfaction' on my wedding night!. It's great to think that one day I may tell future grandchildren of my excitement that many moons ago I was once the 'butt' if you like, of one of Will Self manifestation's at that groovy place on Princes Avenue !!.

The book from which we listened so intently- Dorian, is an 'imitation' of the Oscar Wilde classic; Pictures of Dorian Gray. Accurately brought up to date with comparisons to the 80's AIDS epidemic and western society created vanity, this I hope will be a book that infiltrates the masses.

Articles - Tribal Tattoo . By Starpaw.
|
|
Last week the humdrum of everyday life was getting me down; I needed a pick-me-up, a rush - but where exactly do today's rebellious teena...20 somethings go to get their kicks? A piercing and tattoo shop? Surely not?
It'd been a week since I'd been gearing myself up for this, the time it had taken to find a willing victim, I mean friend, to take with me to hold my hand, so to speak while I pay..

Articles - Star Wars Enter the Folk Music Scene
|
|
By Patrick Henry.
The NorthYorkshire moors are a remote area full of historical incidents up to the present when the Fylingdales missile-defence station has just been pledged to the U.S. Star-Wars system.
Roman forts, Viking raids, besieged castles from the Normans to the Stuarts, litter the fringes.
The Cold War nuclear brink ..

by Rich Mills
"But it's raining... (dum dum dub-ba..! dum dum) Raining in my heart..." A distant wave of dash-white-line hugging radio being transmitted from the 'WHO THE HELL HAS BEEN MESSING WITH MY TUNER???' morning-show drifted through the rows of tree lined avenues and terraces.

Places to Visit - A day by the beach - Bridlington Harbour.
|
|
This Sunday I was spoilt for choice - either to visit a Buddhist centre in "Kilham"
or attend a strawberries and cream party. Opted to go and find Zen so duly arrived
with my offspring (Katie and Oliver) at my friend's house (Cilla) punctually (for
a change) at 11.30.

Poetry - What is a Friend?
|
|
by Scott
Have you ever asked yourself, what is a Friend?
Surely it's a special relationship that'll not break but bend.
For you've known each other for years as mates,
During which you've got into some scrapes and states,
And over time recognise each other's strong points,
Confidences and deep thoughts shared over joints,
Are genuinely happy for their luck and enterprises,
Whilst lovingly empathising with their darker surprises.

Driving - Jo's DRIVING LESSONS
|
|
Here I was living alone with my 3 children, my husband having just left us to cope alone. My eldest daughter, only just 18, was keen to learn to drive and I didn't want to spend a fortune on driving lessons, at least not until she could learn as much as she could from me.
