Welcome to The Wellington Inn (1/2) (1/2), (2/2).

Fed up with trendy wine bars? Do you long for a different kind of pub with a unique atmosphere, the finest selection of Beers and Ales, served to you by the friendliest staff?

The kind of pub you can really feel at home in? A pub that has the love and commitment poured in so you, the customer will feel the warmth of your welcome pouring out? Look no further. Janette, Richard, their dedicated family of staff and regulars, have created just the place. Here's Janette's story ...
Prior to buying the Wellington Inn, Richard and I were tenants at Ye Olde Black Boy in Hull for three years. We really enjoyed town life even though both of us were brought up and lived until then in the Holderness area.
We will have been married for seven years on the 20th August this year although we have known each other since I was 13 and Richard was 16 when we first went out together, we went our separate ways after a few years only to meet up again many years later when our lives had changed. Richard was a haulage driver and had seen many pubs from the other side of the bar and I was working in accounts and had similar experiences.
After getting married we decided to embark on a joint venture and we both took our National Licensees Certificate, B.I.I. and pub management course in Burton on Trent.

We had always wanted to own our own pub and over the years had put a lot of ideas together which we hoped one day to achieve.
When the opportunity came up to buy The Wellington Inn in May 2004, Richard and I knew it would be a challenge. The pub was very tired and needed a good ragging out!
We took all our staff from the Black Boy and we all set to work. It seemed like everything needed replacing but we tried throughout to retain the feeling of a real pub.
My parents stripped the countless layers of wallpaper and Sarah (one of our bar staff) rubbed and scrubbed the walls. Richard and our son Michael removed all the dog-eared fixed seating and the old concrete bar etc., ready to start a new.
All the family and several previous customers helped fix and mend the walls and floor before the contractors could come in, and thanks to them we were ready in time. All the basics like the plumbing and electrics etc. had to go in first then the new cellar installation to bring it up to date. Soon the new floor, the bar and the chiller were installed and it started to look really good.

Music Reviews - Monday 10th July 06 - The Briggs at The Ringside, Hull By Jason and Jordan Carroll Photographs by Mo
My son and I had just drove up from Stockport where on Sunday night we saw The Briggs, and yes we are big fans. On Monday night there were only about 60 people there, which is a shame for a great band from the USA. They came on and it was 100 miles per hour from start to finish with great songs like One Shot Down, Waiting in the shadows, Dungeon Walls Read more...

Music Reviews - 6th July Stripped 1st Birthday at the Wellington Inn By Michelle Dee Photographs By Mo
Stripped acoustic night is one year old and I have finally managed to get down to one of the increasingly popular nights of live music. I order a pint of the Stripped birthday ale produced specially for the occasion and slip into a seat near the front. The music takes place in an area to the left of the main bar in a fairly small room, Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 13th June 06 - Bon Jovi at KC Stadium By Steve Rudd Photographs by Brigitte Freeman
Fans of rock music in Hull haven't really had much cause to complain over the past couple of years, given the fact that the likes of Bryan Adams and REM have both played at the KC Stadium. I could hardly believe it when Bon Jovi were announced to play as the final date of the band's European leg of their world-wide Have A Nice Day tour, and thus I duly Read more...

Music Reviews - Sunday 25th June 06 - Wireless Festival with The Who, The Eels and Turismo at Harewood House Leeds By Moggy SideWinder (Good friend of Pete Townshend)
After careful, strategic, military organisation (something that has always come naturally to Hull bands) Turismo and their entourage were ready for lift off which would launch them bang in the middle of Harewood House in Leeds for the Wireless festival. Sadly, much to the distaste of your humble narrator, the organisation committee had exempted me Read more...

Music Reviews - 27th June Shindigg Le Shed Franks and Khi at Piper Club By Michelle Dee with photo gallery
Tonight was a break from the norm, Piper on a Tuesday instead of the Sesh? My step-dad once said enough is as good as a feast and a change is as good as a rest. He also had things to say about fruit machines, one-legged men in arse kicking competitions and matchboxes, but they aren't particularly relevant here. So there we were, Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 2nd June 06 - Outspoken Silence Jack Knife and Screaming Sorrow at The Ringside By Michelle Dee Photographs By Mo
In the last month I have spoken about trying to publicise different genres on thisisull.com so to this end I accepted the invitation from Outspoken Silence to the half term gig at The Ringside on Beverley Rd. First off I am not versed in the intricacies of the Emo genre, nor do I have any real knowledge about the subculture built around the Emo bands. But I can simply Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 1st June 06 - The Johnsons, Unless, The Everydays and special guests from Japan The Warm at The Adelphi By Michelle Dee Photographs By Mo
Thursday night saw four different live music acts playing the De Grey Street venue. The night was organised by Matt from The Johnsons and new management team Silver Star Media fronted by Gareth Jones. Their night was once again up against some fairly stiff competition in the form of The Paddingtons who were playing Staks Café Bar fifty Read more...
