Down South contd
By Steve Rudd
Prev Page

The aforementioned Royal Pavilion is worth a visit, being one of George IV's spectacularly unique haunts that is more than eye-catching.

Inside, furniture and works of art await those who are curious enough to step inside - after coughing up a small entrance fee of course.
For those who love walking, the South Downs Way finishes (or starts, depending on which way you are headed) not far away, while the long seafront promenade proves to be a perfectly refreshing place to walk, whether you step out in an easterly direction from the Pier (and thus past the well-known Concorde 2 gig venue on Madeira Drive), or West: towards Hove. The choice is yours. Just don't hang around down Madeira Drive at night if you're of a nervous disposition, as it seems to be the in place for boy racers with big cars.
I went down there after dark to try and locate the Concorde Club, which I did eventually do, but I had to fight my way past a line of ten supremely souped-up automobiles and a ravenous gaggle of proud motor-owners and co-drivers on the way.

At the time I'd just been to see rock 'n' roll band The Black Velvets play at the Audio Club - and all I wanted to do was eat my takeaway in peace!
Further east down Madeira Drive, and past the Concorde and boy racers, you'll find Brighton Marina, which is alleged to be one of Europe's most ambitious and complex engineering projects of the late 20th century.
There are also a number of theatres and art galleries nearby if you're still bored. And if you're still bored after that, why not chill out and go celeb-hunting? Brighton has long been a safe sanctuary away from the nearby trials and tribulations of big city life in London, and the city has long been a haven for the rich and famous, so just keep an eye out. Zoe Ball and the folk-infused punk-rock band The Levellers reside in the city for starters.
Should the sun shine during your stay there, so much the better. To an extent, Brighton can be compared to Blackpool (or a number of a great many more seaside resorts), but Brighton does ooze a charm all its own, and being prominently located on the south coast as it is, the sea breeze always seems that little bit warmer than anywhere else. And if all the above isn't a good enough advert for the city then I don't know what is!...

So why not go there someday soon for yourself? Go on... Brighton up!!!
