As the blazing red sunset slowly but surely cast Hull into shadow, the P&O ferry was ready, and so were the passengers. I'd never travelled by ferry across to the Netherlands, and thus was naturally overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the ferry and the wealth of entertainment on board, what with two cinemas, a kids play area, a restaurant and casino to impress even those who are otherwise hard to impress.

I stayed up on the Sundeck while the ferry pulled away and the dying ebbs of sunlight faded, then I raced up to the cinema to see how Christian Bale coped in Batman Begins. And he coped really well, to be fair. Come midnight I was ready for bed, but I was sharing a cabin with four other people; conditions were understandably cramped as we were packed in like sardines.

Still, if you are travelling alone and you do share a cabin, that of course means the cost comes down a bit and I paid just over a hundred pounds for a return ticket to Rotterdam. 10 hours later, we were there - and that's where the fun really began...
