Thailand By Rich Mills

Expressing the experience of being here in Thailand is difficult to put into words. The sensorial experience is so mind blowing that you begin to feel overloaded. However it is the smallest of things that grab your attention, and stick in the mind. We are waiting for a taxi to take us down to the ferry, so that we can go over to the small island of Koh Maak. This is where we will get the full tropical beach experience, and I can hardly wait.

To kill the time we took a wander through the market here in Trat. A huge place filled with stalls piled high with the strangest of produce. Vegatables and fruit that I cannot even begin to imagine what they are or what they may taste like. The fish stalls are something that has to be seen to be believed, baby sharks, huge tuna, horse-shoe crabs that look like living dinosaurs. People randomly asleep on top of their stall, TV's everywhere showing WWF wrestling among the row upon row of food stalls. The Thai's eat constantly, snacking throughout the day.

Other sights that stick out and amuse the mind are things like the motorbikes piled high with people. Riding one-handed, an umbrella in the other to sheild themselves from the rain. Good people everywhere, the friendliness is almost overwhelming. There is simply a sense of peace about the place, a truly relaxed civilisation. Fun is their mantra, for the Thai's life is about having fun. Not to be taken too seriously, which suits me fine, it's how I want to live and how I do live my life.

I wanted to write a short piece for thisisull.com, to try and get across the experiences, to share them with everyone. Sat here in the open typing away, it is harder than I thought to get it right, to fully encapsulate what is around me. I will keep trying however, we have many months of travelling ahead of us, and much, much more to see. From the tropical islands of Thailand to the northern mountains, the rivers of Laos and the jungles of Cambodia, the party islands of southern Thailand dancing on the beach as the sunrises, a Singapore Sling in the Raffles Hotel, is what we have to look forward to before we even get to Australia to see my parents.
