One year ago a tsunami battered this coast and killed thousands and there's still a lot of evidence of it's destruction in this area which was the hardest hit in the country, but the tourists who were here at the time talk about it more than the locals who've already picked themselves up and moved on.
Boxing Day I'm sitting in a bar that was hit by the wave last year and the atmosphere is so relaxed as I smoke my breakfast spliff and tuck into bacon and eggs. Only the odd film crew marked the anniversary until 7pm, then every temple in the country held a remembrance ceremony in honour of those lost.
|
Glass-bottom boats can be hired very cheaply though most of the coral reef that was here has been destroyed by the tsunami. There are still some good places to snorkel and equipment can be hired cheaply as can most things here.
Unawatuna is a beautiful sheltered cove, just outside of Galle and only about 10k from
Hikkaduwa and is probably the best place for this as the sea is so calm and clear here.

Kandy takes about 5 hours but is well worth the drive for the scenery alone.
High up in the mountains, Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka
and has some amazing statues and temples including the Buddha's Tooth Temple.
Half an hour's drive from Kandy is the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage where you
can bottle-feed the babies for a few rupees, then watch 80 elephants
charge through the streets to bathe in the river which is a pretty surreal sight.
Great if you like elephants???

Pot is tolerated here and you can skin up pretty much anywhere. The local weed is pretty poor quality and very cheap. Make sure you take your own skins because not a shop in the country sells king size papers and the best you can get is regular red Rizla.
Every beach-bum and tuk-tuk driver can usually get you some jungle grass but be careful. The first time I tried to score I was ripped off for a whole £2.00.
Not having learned my lesson, later that same night I met a tuk-tuk driver who
promised he could sort me out.
After being driven into the jungle for half an hour by a complete stranger and
having no idea where I was, we stopped at a house where he introduced me to a
monk who happily sold me two ounces for £12.00.

Luckily for me, this
time was not a rip off and I became good friends with that tuk-tuk driver.

After watching many episodes of Most Haunted on Living TV and finding it very interesting, my partner and I decided to spend a night in a haunted inn previously visited by the Most Haunted team and investigate for ourselves.
Loaded with many ghost hunting

Holidays - Ibiza, The World Keeps Gurning By Andi
|
|
Ibiza has long been known as the clubbing capital of the world. However, recent
years have seen the development of resorts such as Ayai Nappa in Cyprus
and Faliraki in Rhodes.
This has lead to a fairly wide-spread belief that Ibiza is dying it's death.

Holidays - Al's Trip To Croatia By Allen Miles
|
|
£649 is a lot of money in most people's eyes. And to spend that much money on seven days away when
you're only earning £130 a week might be in a very real way considered lunacy.
However, I decided to go for three reasons;

Holidays
- Simple Holiday Pleasures by Mike

The time was 7.30 am and I was already awake. Liz stirred as I crept out of
the caravan without waking Alex and Anna. From our elevated position overlooking the bay,
the Med looked as calm as a millpond. The panoramic view was stunning as usual.

Holidays - Prague by Nicholas Boldock

So off we went. On arrival at Ruzyne airport, my main worry was that our taxi driver would not be there. For some reason this was the thing I was most concerned about. My fears were unfounded.

Holidays - Cyprus by Petra
|
|
One dismal Monday afternoon I was sitting in the pub with my neighbour David, bemoaning the weather and feeling miserable, when David uttered the immortal words "let's go on holiday". Quicker than you can say " Linford Christie" we were at the travel agents choosing our destination.

Opinions - Is the Hull Music Scene Dying? By Anonymous
|
|
My argument is about how bad the indie scene in hull is getting.
First of all, Indie? Where did the term indie come from?
As you can remember Indie is short for Independent, which means a band
on an independent label. But since Oasis, Blur and The Verve became big
then every band eventually had that Brit pop sound which is decribed as Indie.
Obviously it has

Opinions - Intolerance By Lee Cassanell
|
|
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark according to a twisted branch of the Muslim tree, and whereas the rest of the sane world is astounded and disgusted by the ludicrous invention that is Microwavable Bacon, the Muslims have a bee in their burkas about a few pictures of the Prophet Mohammed that were innocently printed in a Danish newspaper.
So incensed

Opinions - Political Correctness Can Be a Good Thing By David Sloan
|
|
The idea of using political correctness to improve society is a very good one.
Everyone has the right to be treated equally, regardless of their sex, colour or religion.
Unfortunately, as with most good ideas, it has been corrupted and distorted by
small-minded people who use it to their own ends.
Every day now someone seems to be knocking political correctness.

Opinions - Reply to Michelle Dee's Review of Band Wars at The Polar Bear By Nathan Walker
|
|
What a shame you had a very biased person reviewing the
Polar Bear Battle Of The Bands final. A little bit of research will have shown that
Jimmy Hates Willy earned their place in the final by virtue of being in the top two bands to play at each
of their heats (I have a feeling they were one of the only two in each of their heats, but you know!).
As for The Cyclones

Opinions - Reply to Michelle Dee's Review of Band Wars at The Polar Bear By Loz Cyclone, The Cyclones

I had to take umbrage with
Michelle Dee's totally cattish and twisted so-called review of Band Wars.
Admittedly, she* did provide the highlight of the evening by remonstrating with one of
the judges about the unfairness of the decision to give Conscience the grand in cash.
The watching Cyclones laughed at the hystericalness of it all.
Now to a few facts. The Cyclones, who

Opinions - Reply to Michelle Dee's Review of Band Wars at The Polar Bear By Sue Watson
|
|
I have just read
Michelle Dee's review of the Band Wars final at the
Polar Bear and I am outraged and horrified that you have allowed her
to write what she did.
Not only has she slandered the landlady of the Polar Bear, but also myself,
as I was one of the judges that night and can assure you, I know enough about music to
warrant my place as a judge.
Not only have I been

Opinions - Response To Anthony Newlyne's Article By Steven Greendale
|
|
Commenting on the article by Anthony Newlyne taking a poke at Ian Newton for his
new book The Night Shift, and saying because it is six episodes of a sitcom,
'it is cheating to publish it.' :
What a load of rubbish. Ian Newton is one of the best local writers Hull has
produced for years, and a real character.
We must all remember his antics some time ago now when he

Opinions - Hull Writer Ian Newton is Cheating By Anthony Newlyne
|
|
Ian Newton the writer had just produced his third book.
The book is six episodes of a sitcom and called The Night Shift.
THIS IS CHEATING!!
Obviously Ian Newton cannot get his sitcom on telly so someone has published it for him.
I bought a copy of the book, and all I can say if that is the standard of
comedy writing turned down by TV companies, then I have no chance,

Opinions - Rise of the Madmen By Lee Cassanell
|
|
I'm driven with a mission from God.
God would tell me, George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan. And I did, and then God would tell me, George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq... And I did.
And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me: go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East. And by God I'm gonna do it.

Opinions - Mark Pollard's Response to a Couple of Hull's Blinkered Critics

Well, Channel 4's rubbish programme the other week (I can't even be arsed to mention it's name any more) certainly resulted in the odd fucknut blowing the cobwebs from their PC keyboard and jumping onto that bitter little bandwagon, didn't it?
You want to know what's the worst thing about Hull? It's that, like any other city, it has it's fair share of these types -

Opinions - MP Diana Johnson Uninspired by Hull By David Sloan
|
|
Hull MP Diana Johnson thinks prisoners should be allowed to vote. If she went on the streets of Hull and asked the people what they thought I'm sure she would get a very different answer.
She was inspired, she says by a former inmate John Hirst, who served a life sentence for manslaughter.
He mounted a legal challenge saying depriving him of his vote was against his human rights.
He is now free,
