Hank's for coming........and so are his mates!

Local resident Ella Street summed up the mood of the people by declaring "You can hear the fair from our garden on a night". Tom, who's flown in especially, added " I don't feel like a gump anymore - I've been hankering to be here for years. You just don't get anything like this out our way". Both will vote for Vertigo in this year's Best Ride category.

Away from the hubbub of the main fairground, Walton Street is beginning to take on the appearance of a caravan train, just-arrived in an exotic oasis. Stalls selling local delicacies are going up along with those of good fortune-tellers, and I can see three teams of very sporting hawkers marking out their pitches as I speak. As I wandered through the sideshows, Bob let on "Carver's will be a favourite for Most Satisfying Attraction".
