The 2005 Trackrod Rally Yorkshire - 8th to 9th October 05
By Matt Rudd
Next Page

Yorkshire's biggest off road motor sport event returned to the forests of North Yorkshire on October 8th and 9th. This was of course Rally Yorkshire the penultimate round of the Kwik Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship.

Apart from the BRC cars which ran both days the rally incorporated many almost support rallies these included the Landrover Challenge, British Historic's, The Stars Of The Future, which was within the National event and then on the second day of the rally it was the turn of the Clubman event.
The rally prompted the return of 2 times British Champion, Jonny Milner to make a welcome return in the championship using Ryan Champion's Mitsubishi Lancer which forced Ryan to use a S1600 Puma.

Other top names in the rally included last years winner Mark Higgins, 18 year old rally sensation Matt Wilson, Steve' VK' Perez and Hannu Mikkola's son Vesa.
In the National and Clubman events top names included John Bannister, Donovan Jenkin and Tim Pearcey. Finally, top names in the Historic event included Steven Smith and Dessie Nutt in their Porsche 911's, Hull's Chris Green, Brian Bell and Peter Slights.
Day One:
We went to the Dalby Forest complex - unfortunately a bit too late for the Givendale stage so we had to wait over 30 minutes until the Housedale stage became live.

Almost as soon as we had the first few Historics past us, the heavens opened and almost never stopped all day. Because obviously the Historic cars are mainly rear wheel drive, it did prove a real struggle for them to get round the 90º right on to the tarmac section of Housedale.
Most of the cars did have problems with under steer and were using all of the road. Surprisingly however, only one of the Escorts went on to the grass at the outside of the corner and it was quickly recovered. By then the Historics were over and before the BRC's we had a massive gap to fill in so, yes, we went walking down the stage and after the Speccy Control car past us we decided to stand at a tight right hand hairpin going up-hill, which before the cars reached they had a good 2 miles of straight and top gear corners.
The first car was Matt Wilson. He went very deep into the exit of the corner but the Focus WRC's four wheel drive soon got him up to pace again which meant he lost hardly any time. Steve Perez in his Focus also went deep into the corner, while local hero Jonny Milner clipped the bank on the exit of the corner.

Last year's winner Higgins had the tightest line through the corner but he did brake a lot earlier.
John Lloyd also went in to the hairpin too hot and had a big slide; Ryan Champion had a massive sideways moment which did result in a few seconds time loss as the front wheel drive Puma struggled for grip.

The Grp N Impreza of Rob Swann was very wide on the exit. After struggling to control the slide, Kate Heath ended up stalling on the corner and lost a good 6 or 7 seconds getting the car going once more. Rob Gill, who had rolled somewhere earlier in the day had lots of body damage and was very slow through the corner.
Then the Landrovers, most of them driven by the Army were next on the road and we were joined by some of their colleagues who were spectating. Most of the Landrovers did have wide exit lines and therefore hit the outside banking. One of them came in too hot mid-point in the corner and overshot the corner forcing him to reverse.

Then, yet again another gap until the British Rally Championship's Star's Of The Future which was part of the National Rally.
The first car was the bright yellow Suzuki Ignis of James Wozencroft. As usual, he was driving on the limit. Phil Morton in the Datsun 120 Coupe took a very wide sideways line through the corner. Dom Mernock was very slow though the corner then Tom Walster's 205 got stuck in gear during the corner which made him struggle immensely up the hill on the exit. He retired at the end of the stage.

You guessed it, yet another gap until the National event.

The new Hull Hornets A.F.T have agreed a deal with the Ennerdale Sports Centre, Sutton Road, Hull. The Hull-City-council-owned centre last staged a competitive American football game in the late 1980s, when the city's former team the Kingston Liberators played at the site, although many people still associate the Ennerdale complex with American football in the city. Sports, F1 - Motor Racing - How Pathetic! By Matt Rudd
I have always been a fan of motor sport, whether it was Rallying , Moto GP or Formula One. However on Sunday it was the US Formula One Grand Prix. To be honest this was the most pathetic race I have ever seen, instead of about 20 cars on the starting grid only 6 came onto the track these were the 2 Minardi's , Jordan's and Ferrari's. Sports, Football - What a night. Liverpool European Champions By Gregory Anderson
What a night. Everything I've believed about football - Steven Everett spoke of it - has been kicked into row Z. Much will be written and spoken about the night Liverpool became football kings of Europe, and rightly so. Milan's first goal was, we must admit, a sickener. A set-piece from the first attack in the first minute. Traore - showing us the skill that scored that Burnley own goal - started as nervous as Read more...

Sports, Boxing - Fight Club By Stephen Allen
Nobody told me I should do boxing. It was only my cousin Gavin who told me about the St Paul's Boxing Club when I was eleven. Gavin took me down there the first time. I didn't know what to expect. As we pulled up I saw a small brick building, with a blue sign saying St Paul's. Read more...

Sports - The Beverley 2k Fun Run By Eleanor Smith Age 7 and Eleanor's Mum
I thought the Fun Run was very tiring but I tried to carry on. My Mum and my brother's friend Ross were doing it too. I wish I could do the big run when I'm older. When I was doing the Fun Run I had a stitch in my tummy but I carried on. My medal was excellent. I showed it too my class in 2FB Anlaby School. They wanted to do the Fun Run as well. My friend Eden was very very happy to see I had a medal and Read more...

Sports - Beware of the Cat - Beverley 10k - Sunday 15th May 05 By Mike Pullon
The 2003 Beverley 10 k was , at 44 , my first attempt at any sort of competitive running for about 30 years. As part of a weight loss, and fitness gain, plan over the previous year I had been running about 2 miles a day and felt that this event would be a good test for me. My goal was to finish and if possible not last. In the event I found that the motivation Read more...

Sports - The Beverley 10k Run - Sunday 15th May 05
By Jonathan Rollison
The Beverley 10k - what a fantastic morning - well done Beverley Athletics Club! This was my first ever running event since school - 26 years ago. The main highlight was to see my 11 year old in the fun run come storming back into the main arena at full tilt looking determined to get a few places up the field in the 2k race. He admitted later that he started the home sprint too early, but Read more...

Sports, Speedway - Why Speedway? By Danny Searle
Why do I love speedway? My Dad used to go before I was born. As I started getting older I went more often. But I remember I was four when I first started to go. I can't remember the first time I went to Speedway. I can however, remember two of the riders, Jan Stapman and Joe Screen. I can't remember Read more...

Sports, Football - In Reply To Football Sugar Daddies - Helping or Killing (By Steve Everett) By Gareth Marshall
First of all, I have to concede that I actually agree with Steve about the crux of his article. There's nothing more satisfying than seeing a team who seemingly represent everything that is bad about the modern game and who have pretty much had riches and success handed to them on a plate Read more...
