The 2005 Alternative Sign Centre Robin Hood Forest Stages Rally - 12th and 13th March 05
By Matt Rudd
next page,

The rally as based around the Sherwood Forest Complex which did when there were lots of merry men and women competing in their brilliant rally cars.
I didn't see many people in green tights like of the Robin Hood film but you never know what drivers have under their overalls.
The rally was a two day event with the Historic Rally running on Saturday evening and Sunday. The majority of the historic entry came from the 2005 ARMAJARO-MSA British Historic Rally Championship, in which this was the first round of the championship.

The historic event in total covered 42 stage miles over 10 stages, 3 of these stages where in darkness.
There was also a Trophy Rally for the historic cars which were in a fit state to drive on Sunday if they retired on the Saturdays stages.

In this event there were some great cars and drivers including reigning champion Dessie Nutt (Porsche 911), Gareth Lloyd in his West Wales Rally Spares sponsored Mark II Escort RS also Patrick Watts who used to be a successful driver in the British Touring Car Championship.
The modern event in total covered 10 stages which added up to 43 miles the championships which were covered in this event were the AEMC, ANCC, ANEMMC and EMAMC regional association championships.

The modern event also had some great drivers. Car 1 was the Lancer of Bob Morgan who won this event last year.
His main opposition would be coming from the brilliant Kevin Procter in his Ford Puma 4x4 and what a brilliant fight these two had.
Unfortunately I only went on the Sunday, however I got the best of both worlds I got the brilliant looks and sounds of the historic machines the 911's, Minis and the beautiful Datsun 240's.

And then I got the blistering pace of the Subaru's and Mitsubishi's. I was based for the day on the Clipstone South stage in the heart of the Sherwood Pines Park. For the first run through the stage we got both categories of these wonderful machines the modern and historic cars.
The historic cars like normal were very entertaining out of the 84 historic cars over 50 where Fords which included 11 Cortina's and the rest were good old Escorts which meant loads of sideways action. Brilliant. Fine, not all of the historic cars are very fast but the way these cars look and sound really makes up for it.
Where I was stood, there where a few overshoots by the drivers. Car 223 spun his car, just avoiding the ditch on the inside. Then after that, there was a break in traffic, followed by the famous popping sound of the modern cars coming nearer.

The high speed, modern drivers had arrived. Cars were getting air on the crest; coming into the corner, breaks were glowing. Kevin Procter's machine was popping loads - it sounded great.
