The Christmas Stages Rally - Tuesday 27th December 05 contd
By Matt Rudd
Prev Page

Photograph Gallery.
Car 20, Mark Thompson had a spin on the right hander. Another driver to suffer this was Geoff Wright who did a 180 degree spin so therefore was facing on-coming cars. After a few more cars, Andy Fenwick came along the grass verge pushing their car which was an unfortunate retirement for the crew as it was their new car.

Garry Johnson was also having problems on the stage but he was still continuing despite large gearbox issues.
He was then passed by Car 35 after the left and right turns. Car 42, Ken Jackson managed to get very sideways on the corner in the Peugeot 306 as did one of the Escort crews later on. Car 86, Anthony Smith got it slightly wrong on the right and then was very wide on the entry to the left hander.
By then that run was about over so we moved once more and after a long break the stage was ready again. The stage was now being run the opposite way round and we were positioned on the second and third corner were it merged with the main circuit. With this being where the start of the stage merged with the track, it did prove very entertaining at times, when cars merging where joining the circuit at the same time as cars where passing on the circuit.
John Rintoul driving the Evo got the car sideways on the right hander on this chicane as did Fox in the Impreza. Ryan Champion was yet another to get lots of sideways.

The Motorscope prepared Escort Mk2 missed the first corner and overshot into the escape road as did Geoff Wright and Craig Pennington in the Cosworth. Phil Morton was another driver who had missed the corner and ended up overshooting.
On the track however, lots of overtaking was still going on, either from beimg caught up or at the merge. Car 89, the Peugeot 205 of Andrew Auld ended up spinning on the right turn of the chicane, as did the Escort Mk1 of Paul Slingsby.
For the next run through the stage - my final one as we had to start heading home, I was back at the chicanes I had started at earlier on in the day but the drivers were going the other way due to the changes made earlier.

On numerous occasions whilst at this location, there were many instances of one wheel in the air cornering drivers. Included in this action were Tony Bardy and Martin Fox.
Once again we were treated to some great sideways action from the Chevette of Champion and the Mk1 of Nick Cook.

And once again on this stage, lots of cars were closely grouped together; for example Kevin Garthwaite was being chased by the Peugeot 306 of Ken Jackson. 2 of the cars got a bit too close - Car 65, the Mini of Mitch McGrath did get tapped into the gravel by, I believe, Car 56.

So the results:
1st) Tony Bardy and Reg Smith - Nissan Sunny GTIR
2nd) Tim Finch and Paul Hughes - Ford Escort
3rd) John Rintoul and Jim Rintoul - Mitsubishi Lancer EVO V1
4th) Martin Fox/ Linda Whitmore - Subaru Impreza
5th) Dave Bellerby/ Tom Cardie - Ford Escort
The event was organised by the Northallerton Motor Club www.northallerton-ac.co.uk
