The Goodyear British Off Road Championship
Final Round - Driffield October 23rd and 24th 2004
By Matt Rudd (Age 14)
|
|
The Goodyear British Off Road Championship is Britains premier off road motorsport
championship with five extremely fast paced rounds including Radnor Forest,
Ellesmere and Driffield.
|
Although Richard Kershaw had already won the championship in his brilliant Amaterati
buggy other scores still had to be settled and what a place to do it in.
The site used by the BORC competitors was the former RAF Driffield base.
The site is now used by the army as a driver-training center.
But for one weekend per year it is home to the final round of the BORC.
|
|
|
The stage is just over 5 miles in length. Each competitor has a certain number of laps
around the stage over the two days and then the times are added up the team with the
lowest time wins.
The stage included some great obstacles for the competitors to negotiate.
These include absolutely massive jumps, water splashes and there are even tarmac sections.
This event is a real challenge for man and machine.
|
|
Because of their being so many obstacles around the vast site, there were so many
great spectator points throughout the site but for me the greatest were close
to the jumps and the massive water splashes.
Because of all the mud, water and everything else thrown up by these machines,
I got absolutely covered in the stuff. But all this adds to the fun of the
sport you actually feel like part of the action.
|
The off roaders used in this superb championship are amazing.
You get vehicles like the Landrover Freelander, then you see Richard Kershaw's
mighty Amerterati buggy - what a brilliant contrast in competitive 4x4's.
If you have never been to one of these events I would strongly recommend that you
do go to one of the five rounds in the 2005 championship.
This for me is one of the greatest and fastest forms of motorsport in the world.
I even made fellow website writer Steve Rudd enjoy the sport!
Some of these machines can go faster in a straight line than WRC cars.
It is also a lot more entertaining than F1.
|
The event was won by Ryan Cooke Land Rover TMC 2h33m07s
2nd) Richard Kershaw Amaterati 2h 41m 37s
3rd) Roger Jones Simmbugghini 2h 47m 28s
