He commented that he would stop doing them if he couldn't teach on a voluntary
basis; It's also important to us to be an inclusive club.
We are currently trying for MENCAP accreditation status.
We've also recently organized demonstrations at HERIB and at
Bricknell Primary School and have raised money for Hull Royal Infirmary from events in the city.
We are happy to put on displays - all we need is for people to get in touch.
|
|
|
It was a very busy evening - there was such a lot going on.
As well as the class supervised by Mike, there were some students in a separate
room being graded on their 'Forms'.
A Form is a series of movements and techniques put together.
The grade is awarded to individuals as they progress, with different
coloured sashes for each grade.
|
A row of half a dozen children were being put through their paces, practicing
their 'forms' to be assessed and graded, too.
It's a graceful art - I was impressed at the poise and stamina which is needed
to tackle the forms. There were 4 Chief Instructors on hand tonight out of a
total of 8 altogether.
|
|
|
Mike told me that insurance is provided for the club by World Budo-Kai who
also run 3 monthly events where students (and Instructors) can learn about
different styles of Kung Fu. - teaching different styles.
Everyone helps one another, he explained.
The popularity of this sport is growing.
Mike and his team are hoping to start another arm of the club at
Bricknell Primary School (if you're interested, keep your eyes out on
thisisUll.com for details).
There's also one starting in Beverley at the High School which will be
specifically aimed at people with health problems.
|
|
After visiting Australia last year to take part in new training,
Mike's going to China in April and is hoping to bring back a new style and new weapons.
|
|
I sat and spoke to one of the students, Georgina, to find out what her story was. .
She's been studying Kung Fu for 4 months.
She was introduced to the club by her brother who was already keen on the sport.
At the time she practiced women's Karate and self defence.
|
|
|
I love it! she said; and since then I've quit karate and have carried on with Kung Fu.
It has more variety and discipline, there are more events and I don't have to travel far.
|
Georgina enjoys the special courses that are run in addition to the weekly training sessions.
She recently went on a 4 day course to learn new techniques, the Dragon Form and
Tiger Form.
She really enjoys the form work but is also keen on taking part in shows and in combat
and has gained an orange sash which is a 3rd grading.
I'm interested in Chinese Medicine too - you learn how to repair damage which can be
caused in combat.
|
|
|
All chief instructors are CRB checked, and trained in child protection, working with
disabilities, equity and First Aid.
Kung Fu can be successful at reducing bullying in schools.
But Kung Fu is not just about being able to defend yourself.
It can help to build confidence and self discipline, as well as helping
improve your health, fitness and general well-being.
It has helped a lot of children gain good careers, good education in human
biology, gain leadership skills and build social skills.
All level of abilities are welcome to join.
