Hard (an exploration of sport and masculinity, from the perspective of a recently-retired loose forward) (1/2)
By Perry Farrell
(1/2) (2/2)

No more rugby, then. Played me last game. Twenty years of it. I had some great times - on the field and off. But what was the point? You can get into the habit of something and let it become so big, that you can't even remember why you started doing it in the first place.

I think it was all about being macho. Being hard. You didn't know why, but if you had a certain personality or a certain background, it was just something you did. Other lads joined the army. Instead of medals, we had cuts and bruises; breaks, sometimes. If you were lucky you'd have a few scars - a more permanent reminder of how hard you were. And there was a strange pride to be had from going out on the town with a limp or a fat lip.
Most of the time, the rules of the game kept you from coming to any real harm, but when you keep running into 16 stone of beef and bad temper, rules don't come into it - it just bloody hurts.

A feller called Graham Lowe, coach of the great Wigan team of the 1980s, once said that playing a game of rugby was like getting mugged every minute for an hour-and-a-half. He was right.

Fear? Yeah, there was fear.
It was something you thought about, but never dared speak it. No bloody way. I guess we just relied on adrenaline to take care of things; fight or flight, I suppose. No choice on a rugby field though - you can't run away there. But adrenaline is nature's anaesthetic, and you never felt any pain until later - usually, just as you were jumping off the bus for your first pint in town. Perfect if there were a few birds around - the wounded heroes returning from battle.

At that age we had a different approach to life in general, I suppose. Including sport.
We weren't very good sportsmen, really. Let's face it - rugby's based on intimidation and violence, and the best way to do violence is build up a bit of hatred beforehand. So while some people go on about the honour and decency in rugby, it's usually just writers who've never played the fucking game. Yeah, those things existed, up to a point - we'd all shake hands at the end of game and have a beer, but it only lasted until the next match.

A lot of the guys you came up against had nowt in their lives, especially those from the pub sides off the estates. No job. No money. No prospects. Just a lot of pent-up aggression.

Sports, Karting - Fast Track Karting By Julian Thorley
If you have a need for speed, then it could easily be satisfied by going Karting. Having never experienced it before, I was looking forward to trying it with a number of work colleagues. We went to the Fast Track Karting circuit in deepest East Hull straight from work. First impressions of the place were good. A new building holding reception, briefing Read more...

Sports - Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting By Cilla Photographs by Roland Standaert and Mo
The world of martial arts has always been a mystery to me. I wouldn't know the difference between a leg block and a karate chop. When I was presented with the opportunity to go a long to see what happens at a Kung Fu class, I thought it would be a good idea - it might help to de-mystify the sport. So one chilly Wednesday evening a couple of weeks ago Read more...

The new Hull Hornets A.F.T have agreed a deal with the Ennerdale Sports Centre, Sutton Road, Hull. The Dukeries Rally, like the North Humberside which was my last rally, is a round of the BTRDA rally championship. Sports, F1 - Motor Racing - How Pathetic! By Matt Rudd
I have always been a fan of motor sport, whether it was Rallying , Moto GP or Formula One. However on Sunday it was the US Formula One Grand Prix. Sports, Football - What a night. Liverpool European Champions By Gregory Anderson
What a night. Everything I've believed about football - Steven Everett spoke of it - has been kicked into row Z. Much will be written and spoken about the night Liverpool became football kings of Europe, and rightly so. Milan's first goal was, we must admit, a sickener. A set-piece from the first attack in the first minute. Traore - showing us the skill that scored that Burnley own goal - started as nervous as Read more...

Sports, Boxing - Fight Club By Stephen Allen
Nobody told me I should do boxing. It was only my cousin Gavin who told me about the St Paul's Boxing Club when I was eleven. Gavin took me down there the first time. I didn't know what to expect. As we pulled up I saw a small brick building, with a blue sign saying St Paul's. Read more...

My friend Eden was very very happy to see I had a medal and Read more...

The 2003 Beverley 10 k was , at 44 , my first attempt at any sort of competitive running for about 30 years. Sports - The Beverley 10k Run - Sunday 15th May 05
By Jonathan Rollison
The Beverley 10k - what a fantastic morning - well done Beverley Athletics Club! This was my first ever running event since school - 26 years ago. The main highlight was to see my 11 year old in the fun run come storming back into the main arena at full tilt looking determined to get a few places up the field in the 2k race. He admitted later that he started the home sprint too early, but Read more...

Why do I love speedway? My Dad used to go before I was born. As I started getting older I went more often. But I remember I was four when I first started to go.
