Why Speedway? By Danny Searle

Why do I love speedway? My Dad used to go before I was born. As I started getting older I went more often. But I remember I was four when I first started to go. I can't remember the first time I went to Speedway. I can however, remember two of the riders, Jan Stapman and Joe Screen.

I can't remember anything about the riders, but I how fast they were. Even now I remember that initial buzz, of a person moving so fast in a tight space, without breaks. The track was wet and spat out shale all over the place when the riders took corners.

My favourite riders of today have to be Gary Stead, Paul Thorpe and Tony Richardson. Although Tony doesn't ride for Hull Vikings, he was the world champion and has my respect. Gary Stead has an instinctive riding style -he sees an opportunity for overtaking and he goes for it. Paul Thorpe is the most experienced rider in the team, leading us well. If he is leading he will slow to allow team-mates the 5-1 result. For all you readers who don't know the method of scoring in speedway, here it is.

First place gets three points, second gets two points, third gets one point, and fourth gets no points. Some people may say what is speedway?

Well speedway is a sport where two teams race around an oval track. They do four laps around the track. The bikes don't have any brakes. The turn up for the speedway is almost as good as it is for rugby.

As you may have noticed my favourite team is the Hull Vikings! They are in East Hull at Craven Park where there is always a good atmosphere. When the new season starts I'll be there, keeping you all informed on the ups and downs of the season.
