British Touring Car Championship - Solid Showing From Bell at Oulton Park
Photos By Bob and Steve Knightley
|
Barrow-upon-Humber racer Martyn Bell enjoyed one of his most successful weekends of the
2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship season with a brace of Independents'
points finishes at Oulton Park.
The Arkas Racing with Sunshine.co.uk driver picked up five points towards his own
Indpendents' championship tally, while his performances over the course of the
weekend were also rewarded with a hat-trick of Independents' points scores for his
Tech-speed run team.
|
|
With team-mate Erkut missing the weekend due to business commitments back in Turkey,
Martyn was left to fly the flag for the team at the wheel of his
Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch and qualified in 21st place on the grid for race one,
having lost time on his fastest lap behind the SEAT of Chris Stockton.
After finishing the opening race in a lonely 18th place, improvements to the car allowed Martyn to make his way up the order in race two until he found himself battling for 13th place with Stockton's SEAT.
|
|
Despite lapping quicker than the car ahead, Martyn was unable to find a way through - especially with the passenger door on Stockton's machine flying open every time he turned through a left-hand bend - but on the final lap he made a move stick to secure the position and eighth amongst the Independent runners.
|
|
One of his best starts of the year in race three saw Martyn make up places
off the line but he then lost out when Tom Chilton hit Steven Kane at Hislops -
with all the cars behind forced to take avoiding action to miss the stricken pair.
Unfortunately, Martyn was forced to run wide across the grass and slipped back
down the order but after a Safety Car period, he was able to come home to the
finish in 14th place, adding another two Independents' points to his tally in the process.
|
'I've learnt a lot about the car during the season so far and in qualifying I was on for a really good lap before I got held up by Chris Stockton,' Martyn explained.
'We made some changes to the car ahead of the first race but it wasn't quite the right way to go and I focused on just bringing the car home.
|
|
|
'We made a few improvements for race two and the car was a lot better, but I found myself stuck behind Stockton. We were about level through the first sector of the lap, but then I was quicker than him in sector two and three. If I'd managed to get past him a couple of laps earlier, I could have had a go at trying to close in on Harry Vaulkhard for twelfth.
|
|
'In my head, I was on for a top ten finish in the final race and I got a really good start to make up some places, but then Tom Chilton had a blonde moment and everyone had to run off the track to avoid him and Steven Kane. I had to go to the outside while quite a few others took a shortcut across the inside and it meant I dropped back. It's a shame as I feel I could have kept up with the pack, but overall I'm happy with how the weekend went.'
|
|
Martyn now heads north of the border to Scotland in three weeks time for the eighth round of the year at Knockhill, a circuit where he has gone well in the past two seasons.
|
'I wanted some overall points at Oulton, and although we didn't get them, it was good to get three solid finishes after what happened at Snetterton,' he said. 'I have a lot more confidence in the car now and next up we go to Knockhill, which is a circuit I really like.
'In fact, I like all the circuits that are left on the calendar and I'm confident that I can pick up some overall championship points from the final nine races.'

Sports, - Krav Maga Self Defence Classes -7.30pm Every Tuesday in Hull By Paul Riches
|
|
Last month I started looking for something different to do in my spare time. I tried the usual suspects, yoga, pilates, spinning classes but they all felt a bit too tame or boring. I was fed up of the gym and all the big guys making me feel inferior. Then I came across Krav Maga, a self defence training seminar being held in Hull.

Sports - Hard (an exploration of sport and masculinity, from the perspective of a recently-retired loose forward)
By Perry Farrell

No more rugby, then. Played me last game. Twenty years of it.
I had some great times - on the field and off. But what was the point?
You can get into the habit of something and let it become so big, that you
can't even remember why you started doing it in the first place.
I think it was all about being macho. Being hard. You didn't know why, but

Sports - Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting By Cilla Photographs by Roland Standaert and Mo

The world of martial arts has always been a mystery to me.
I wouldn't know the difference between a leg block and a karate chop.
When I was presented with the opportunity to go a long to see what happens at a
Kung Fu class, I thought it would be a good idea - it might help to de-mystify the sport.
So one chilly Wednesday evening a couple of weeks ago

My first gravel event of the year, like last year, was on the Riponian Stages Rally which this year
took place on Sunday 5th of February.
The event had a total of 14 stages with a mixture of gravel and tarmac on the stages.
Like last year I was once again on the 2 Riccal Dale stages throughout the event.
The rally did have a good entry - maybe not in terms of numbers,

The 2005 Christmas Stages Rally was held on 27th December.
The rally itself was all based at the legendary Croft race circuit near
Darlington (North Yorkshire).
Unfortunately, I wasn't there for the whole of the rally due to snow (mainly in East Yorkshire).
This was actually the first time I had ever been to a tarmac event in the 4
years I have been spectating, the nearest I

The Roger Albert Clark (November 19th-22nd) is probably one of the most well known events
in the British rally calendar.
Last year the rally was resurrected by the Delacy Motor Club and following a great success,
the rally returned once again this year.
And with a stage at Bramham Park near Leeds on day 2 of the 4 day rally spectacular, I just had to attend.

The new Hull Hornets A.F.T have agreed a deal with the Ennerdale Sports Centre, Sutton Road,

The Hull-City-council-owned centre last staged a competitive American football

at the site, although many people still associate the Ennerdale complex with

Sports, F1 - Motor Racing - How Pathetic! By Matt Rudd

I have always been a fan of motor sport, whether it was Rallying , Moto GP or Formula One.
However on Sunday it was the US Formula One Grand Prix.
To be honest this was the most pathetic race I have ever seen, instead of about 20 cars
on the starting grid only 6 came onto the track these were the 2 Minardi's , Jordan's
and Ferrari's.

Sports, Football - What a night. Liverpool European Champions By Mark Ryan

What a night. Everything I've believed about football - Steven Everett spoke of it - has been kicked into row Z.
Much will be written and spoken about the night Liverpool became football kings of Europe, and rightly so.
Milan's first goal was, we must admit, a sickener. A set-piece from the first attack in the first minute.
Traore - showing us the skill that scored that Burnley own goal - started as nervous as
