Learn to speak 'ULL

Thank you to everyone who has emailed us, they are always exciting for us to receive.

Hello.
I would just like to say that I agree with 'Melissa' When she said that not everyone pronounces Hull 'ull! I was born and raised in Hull and I have always pronounced it Hull. Having moved 'darn sarf' nearly 10 years ago, the cheesey southern puffs who have actually heard of Hull have even accused me of not genuinely being from Hull because of the way I pronounce it. But what do they know!!! Just remember we're not all common chavs with fags hanging out of our mouths limiting our way of speaking!!

Fab Website, I feel very home sick now!!

Kaz (ex Hullster)
Ps. Didn't they used to call people from Hull 'Hullensians' or are they just the rugby fans???

Thank you so much for your wonderful website. I am totally addicted and completely hooked. I just do not care as I never want to be cured and go in to any re-habs or even talk to Dorothy about any of it because this really is not a problem. Ok so I haven't cooked tea for the kids for a while and it's been 3 months since I've seen my husband and the dog has lost it's will to live BUT myself I've never been so happy. A glass of wine, a roaring winter fire and the brilliant renegade gang, I'm in my element. I have even done a little shopping on thisisull.com and as I said before a massive big thank you for saving my life-I'M SORTED!!!

I thought that your site believed that the people of Hull deserved some recognition! As a REAL Hull native I can tell you that it isn't just your drug crowd or your student crowd that made Hull.

It was the trawlermen and bobbers that made this town the place it is today! My family were all fishermen and I am discouraged to hear that all of your stuff has been so far from poets and academics etc and not from the REAL Hull people! Without me and my family Hull would have dissapeared into the ether... Stop harping on about the people from HULL and talk about the REAL people who made Hull what it really is today!!!

You tell us about the kids and what they want, I find it all a bit bizzare that a country so deep in trying to protect its bairns from monsters and evil do'ers would try and tell them just who, where and why to find these little 'uns.? Don't you find it a little irresposible to tell the general public where the local kids go to school etc?

Born in Hull in 1928 (Arundel Street) Took off for Australia 1950 to 1862. Back to Oz in 1982 (it's a long story) I have never quite got Hull out of my system just as I've never quite lost the accent. Congratulations on your website - the poetry is mind-blowing and completely un Hull as I remember it. The place has to have a future with young people like your poets in it. Stuff I read on the internet seems to show some bad changes especially in the Preston Road/Bilton Grange/Sutton Trust area where I mostly grew up.but drugs are a problem everywhere including australia I hope things are better than they are painted. As I remember it, Hull was never good enough for its working - class people from the thirties to the present day. I enjoyed the reminiscences of the bloke who was an armature winder at Broady's. I was an apprentice plumber at a called Abba's in Goulton Street. My earliest memories are of living near East Park for a bit, next door to Rovers Ground and again in Arundel Street for the first year or two of the War. Twopenny matinees at the ol! d Savoy and Ritz ciemas in the thirties, buying records in Sydne Scarboroughs under the City Hall in the forties, and the folk-club in the Bluebell Tavern in the sixties. Best wishes to everybody in Hull but especially ion East Hull. I'm seventy six in a few days and I don't suppose I'll see Hull again. If this meets the eye of any surviors who temember me drop me an Email

I am an American writer who will be undertaking a month-long spoken-word tour of the UK this October. I found a section of your website where you actually publish local poets; I was wondering if you had any listings for Hull (and surrounding area) live poetry events?

looking at your website brought back memories of the 1960's when I was a competitive cyclist. I met a guy from Hull whilst he was in the REME in Hythe, Kent. He was a good cyclist and we raced together. He presuaded me to join the Hull Thursday Road Club, which I did, although I never went to Hull. He left Kent and I have never heard from him since. His name was Pete Arnott. can you help me to try and find him? he was also a pigeon fancier, if that helps.

I was in Hull as a student back in the early 80s,and I used to work parttime at Yankerburger in town. Could you please confirm whether your Yankeeburger article(with a car on rooftop) refers to the same Yankeeburger, cos i really want to contact John Science, my ex-boss who is a great guy.

Have never been to Hull, but that''s a very impressive site you''ve got there. It could almost persuade someone to visit... Nice work

Well produced site. Well done, lucky Hullsters

That's quite a funny article on Prague on your website.... I've been there a fair few times and can recommend a few good spots to go skiing but, alas, its slightly more expensive than half a litre of star... but no more expensive than seven.

:D

I enjoyed reading the Hull website. I used to spend quite a few weekends there a couple of years ago and enjoyed the nightlife…… I used to like lunch at the Sailmakers and nights out in town going to Lloyds etc. Was lovely to walk the quayside on a cold Sunday afternoon and get all wrapped up.

Bravo!

I can only echo what greysts has already said, "Everything about it is right, from the muted colour schemes to way the links all go somewhere interesting".

Indeed, a very accomplished site, and not just for the good bergers of Hull. The information is comprehensive and easy to locate and a good deal of it would be of use to out-of-towners too.

I'd even go so far as to suggest this is the best site we've been invited to peruse, if not the best then certainly in the top 3.

All that remains is for me to pull my finger out and do some work on my own site.

I've just spent the last hour wandering all over your site and I have to say it's one of the best designed I've ever seen. Everything about it is right, from the muted colour schemes to way the links all go somewhere interesting. If you're looking for a job I would suggest web design is the place for you. Well done!

Hi

I know almost nothing (yet) about HTML and all that, and I've only ever passed through ull on a couple of occasions about 10+ years ago, but I had a look at the site and couldn't get off it.

No. Not technical problems. Just that it's so addictive. Well done. I hope I'll be able to produce something this interesting, even to a Southerner like myself, when I do decide to create my own site some time in the future.

Hi

My name is brian, I don't have a website of my own, one that I have designed myself that is, but I started the web design course last week.

I just wanted to say that I really liked your site. From the moment it loaded, it looked good and for the brief time I could spend there it liked it very much.

I've never been to Ull, but the site certainly does it justice. If it had a vibe, it's "very cool". Well done.

Brian

Hi there,
I saw your post on the Emma Rugg message board and found my way to your site. It's pretty cool your doing a site about Hull. I saw you have Emma pics have a interview coming soon as well, were obviously fans so you might be interested to know that there's a video of her playing live at Lamp at www.ukscreen.com/screen/74
It's a great performance and the videos pretty good too (and i'm not saying that just cos i made it)
Have a look and see what you think. Linking to it on your site would be a great way to show everyone what Hull's about :)

Hi there Kitegirl,
John Wilson in Castlegar B.C. Canada here. I was born in Hull ( Orchard Park Rd ) in 1950...now you're probably thinking that was before the dinosaurs right !!! :-)
I was just wondering what you thought of the idea of adding some Fascinating Facts about Hull on your site.
For instance...The worlds smallest window. The worlds second largest revolving fire ladder. The longest piece of straight railway track in Great Britain. The worlds second longest single span suspension bridge. William Wilberforce reforming slavery. Amy Johnson. Robinson Crusoe setting sail from there in Treasure Island. ( I did too many times ) and I'm sure there's lots of other pieces of 'ull 'istory you know about, or can find out, that would be of great interest to browsers of your site.
Just an idea ...whatcha think. John.
