They F*** You Up - Spoken Word Workshop at Hull Truck
By Julie Corbett
A steady stream of people went in to Hull Truck and climbed the stairs or took the lift to the first floor. We were all heading for Inter@ct - the space and the first Write to Speak Poetry workshop. A few Hello's but it was mainly a community of strangers.
Joe Hakim began by introducing himself, Mike Watts and Cilla (the editor of www.thisisUll.com . And gosh we the audience were all quiet and attentive.
You could feel the passion for Hull and the shared pride in both www.thisisUll.com and the idea of the Larkin 25 Festival being a spring board for the unique voice of Hull.
Joe and Mike began the workshop by with a short performance of their own poetry.
The audience relaxed a bit and a sense of anticipation started to develop in the room. The boys couldn't help interspersing their own renditions with delight at the turn out and the hope that some of us would stand up and read our own works.
After a short intermission we were invited to read our work out; and read and listen we did.
The range of poetry was vast from rap to prose; we had reminders of Hull's fishing heritage, how we played in Holderness drains and how a wondrous Hull 'girls night out' went. Light to dark, rhymed, metered and free verse.
Hull has a voice and we heard it that night and left wanting more. www.thisisUll.com and we are proud.
The next poetry workshop is to take place on Saturday 22nd May at Victoria Dock Village Hall from 6pm - 8pm.
