Reviews, Humber Mouth 2006
Friday 30th June - Galloway Trucking in Hull (7/8)

Is East London a good constituency for you?

In East London 12 months after electing me, they elected a bunch of RESPECT councillors. There will be more after it has gone through the Electoral court, mark my words. Antiwar feeling is at its highest there; there is a high percentage of ethnic minorities; this has been the place of great anti fascist feeling in the past. Marx has lived in my constituency. Lenin has, Stalin has lived in my constituency!
New Trident versus Iranian nuclear power
Blair is pursuing a new Trident submarine system while deploring Iranian efforts to begin nuclear power with no trace of embarrassment. New Labour is campaigning hard for a successor to Trident. Iran is not even allowed to pursue nuclear power for peaceful purposes. We say NO to them while we are busy preparing for our nuclear weapons upgrade. Then we will be able to threaten them with our new nuclear deterrent!

Only it's not an independent deterrent because we always need the Americans to turn the key. So we have Tony Blair threatening them with someone else's army.
The demise of the Soviet Union has been a disaster. It has made the world unstable. Now we're left with one superpower: a giant with the mind of a child!

A bloodbath if we leave?
To people who ask me if there will be a bloodbath if we leave - I say they obviously don't have a telly! Unless we leave Iraq there can be no solution! They do not want us there. We are the hated invading enemy. I have great faith in the people of Iraq. Iraq is where the alphabet was invented, where the number zero was invented, they had a great library when my ancestors were going around painting themselves blue! Iraq can solve its own problems. Iraq can rebuild itself. They don't need the brain from Texas to go there to sort them out!
What happens when fossil fuels run out in 40 years?
I don't believe we're going to run out of fossil fuels. There are 550 years left of fossil fuels under the countries of the world. But the 21st century is not going to be an American one. The 21st century will be a Chinese century. They have 1.5 billion people, they have one language, one currency. While the Americans are going around the world bombing places, the Chinese are going around the world buying up places. They are using their massive profits in US dollars from their huge trade surplus with America to fund this. They are in a very strong position.
Sudan in bed with China

One of the reasons there is so much mention of Sudan in recent years is that Sudan is wholly in bed with China. They have lots of agreement on oil and resources, road building and the like. So you can bet we will be subjected to much more propaganda on Sudan in the coming years.

Reviews, Films - Alien VS Predator By Steve Rudd
Whoever came up with the bright idea of violently pitting Alien against Predator sure deserves a pat on the back and a raucous round of applause, for this big-budget movie scores on many levels. Whereas the bulk of the Alien franchise has long relied on atmospheric tension rather than all-out action Read more...

Brucie, we need you - and more than ever! A true rock 'n' roll star in every sense and then some, Bruce has had a truly staggering career in the music business, and even as we maniacally rush headlong into the 21st Century he is more popular than ever. This biography of Read more...

Reviews, Films - Open Water By Steve Rudd
I really don't understand why this movie was ever made. Based on true events, this follows a couple of young lovers (Daniel Travis and blonde bombshell Blanchard Ryan) on a diving day-out as part of a vacation they're taking together. Before we know it, they've been stranded in the middle Read more...

Escape through travel works. Almost from the moment I boarded my flight, life in England became meaningless. Seat-belt signs lit up, problems switched off. Broken armrests took precedence over broken hearts. Before the hit movie there was the cult novel written by an unknown Read more...

I imagine that to participate in the world with curiosity and pleasure, to see the point of what is going on, you have to be young and uninformed. Do I want to participate? This is an incredibly compelling novel from Kent-born Hanif (who proves himself to be ever-the-philosopher) Read more...

The other day I went to the UGC cinema in Hull to see 5 Children and It. It was a very good film, based on a book by E. Nesbit. It's about 5 children (surprise, surprise! I can't remember their names, though!) who get sent to live with their loopy uncle in the country during the Read more...

As I write this review it is the height of British summertime, and as I'm staring outside the window at 8:30 PM it's almost black dark out there and pouring it down with rain. Which is - to extents - to be expected, given the UK's terminally unpredictable climate. No wonder Read more...
