Neasden PS, under threat - "Education is not a cost. It's an investment."
Save Hull Schools by Martin J Deane, 21.2.05
|
The proposed closure of 9 Hull primary schools (including the 2 for 'amalgamation') is causing great concern to communities across Hull.
The Council plans to close Newland Ave, St Charles, St George's, Coleford, Constable, Midmere, and The Dales.
|
|
'Amalgamation' sounds better than closure, but in fact Lambwath, and probably Oldfleet schools will be closed, with all moved to other local schools, and the former sites developed. So Hull City Council is proposing a total of 9 primary schools being closed.
A primary school is often the heart of a local community. Officials talk of falling numbers, birth rates and population projections. What they don't say is that smaller class sizes, and lower teacher-pupil ratios help children learn better, or that each of these schools has its own feel and unique sense of tradition.
If they move 1500 children into other schools, class sizes will increase, children's education will suffer in the transition itself, and from the disruption to all those relationships established over years, between children and friends, teachers and parents. Such trust and tradition is vital for children and is at the heart of a community family primary school.
|
|
Since 1997, the Labour government has overseen the closure of about 200 primary schools every single year. Meanwhile the number of children in these age ranges has stayed roughly constant. What is going on?
I have joined the Green Party recently to stand for Parliament in the Hull North area.
Party policy is very definitely small is beautiful.
Each of these schools should be kept and strengthened in the tireless work they do for the children
of each community.
|
Smaller schools, and not giant education factories, are the way forward.
Education is not a cost. Education is an investment.

Public Meetings open to everybody will be held at -
1) St Charles RC PS, Beverley Rd - Mon 21st Feb, 7pm.
2) St George's PS, St George's Rd, off Anlaby Rd - Tue, 22nd Feb 7pm
3) Newland Ave PS, Newland Ave, 3.15 & 6pm Thu 24th Feb
4) Newland Ave PS, also 7pm, Thu 3rd March
The moves will adversely affect the education of 1500-2000 children. Children always take some time to recover from transition between schools, and although the transition may not be as marked as from primary to senior school, teachers can still expect some levels of work to take time to recover.

Colin Powell - Saint or War Criminal? By Martin Deane
|
|
After the near beatification of Ronald Reagan recently, it falls to the peace movement to do the honours once again on the occasion of Colin Powell's recent resignation.
Colin Powell was the official moderate, and national security adviser, under Reagan.
Let's take Africa. During the Reagan years, there was a policy called

Burning Issues - Was 9/11 the greatest show on earth? By Martin Deane.

The War on Terror is based on the premise that the 2001 9/11 attacks on New York and Washingotn,
which killed nearly 3,000 people were carried out by 19 Islamic fundamentalist men.
The official story has been played in such detail throughout our media that we will
all know it. But the facts could be - and probably

Does intelligence help us? By Robin Ramsay.

Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit-9/11 is great propaganda but, like all propaganda, it isn't about
the truth. In a section mocking the so-called "Coalition of the willing" which supported the
US invasion of Iraq, Moore listed several very small countries - but omitted Australia,
the UK and others. For Australia

International Contradictions and Hypocrisies By Andrew Martin |

In Reply To - A letter from Pablo Gonzales to his MP Alan Johnson, By Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP.
|
|
Dear Mr Gonzalez,
Thank you for your thoughtful and considered letter of 17th July.
I have thought constantly about the decision I made to vote for this country to go to war on March 18th 2003. It was of course the first time that a decision to go to war had not been made by royal prerogative.

Iraq and the Butler Report - a letter from Pablo Gonzales to his MP Alan Johnson |

Having caught a glimpse of you yesterday afternoon at Hull Central Library prompted me to write this letter, and my thoughts about the Iraq war.

On Saturday 17th July activists from Hull joined campaigners from all over the region

Tony Blair lives, David Kelly dies By Martin Deane
|

Lord Hutton was chosen by Blair. Lord Hutton was given his brief by Blair. Lord Hutton has whitewashed the Government and scapegoated the BBC. Blair conned us to go to war and the Hutton Report is a smokescreen.
Hutton was a major event in itself, but the real issue is - and remains - responsibility for war. Today no blame

America - no magic rabbit to pull out of the Iraqi hat By Martin Deane
|
|
I heard a story recently. A Labour MP met with Blair over Iraq.
Tony asked how things were in his constituency.
He replied "I've had 3 letters in support of the war - and 350 against!"
Blair, unfazed, said "Don't worry, the people will forget once the war is over."
We want UK troops out of Iraq. Get them out. Bring them home. End this monstrosity of lending

In May 1937 the Spanish liner Habana left Bilbao in Spain, on-board were 4,200 Basque children being brought to the safety of the UK.
The Spanish Civil War had started on July 17th 1936, and the world stood by and watched in horror as innocents were slaughtered.
Some however took it upon themselves to do something about the blood-shed.
