Current Affairs
Have you herd the one about Sainsburys ?
By Louise, Greenpeace, Hull

On Saturday 17th July activists from Hull joined campaigners from all over the region to converge on Sainsburys in Sunderland.

Whilst six of us chained ourselves to the milk aisle, the rest, dressed as cows and milkmen gathered outside the store to highlight the fact that Sainsburys own brand milk comes from cows fed on GM crops. This is about the 10th such event to happen at various different Sainsburys throughout the UK, from Essex to Leeds and even Edinburgh.
As we'd expected, customers were appalled to find that GM was continuing to get into the country despite Bayer's decision not to grow GM here, this year, as there is no market for it. Greenpeace supporters delivered over 500 letters from local people to the store manager, requesting Sainburys make their own brand milk, non-GM.
A few weeks ago 12 Greenpeace volunteers were arrested after they halted a giant cargo vessel laden with GM grain off the coast of Wales. The 125,000 tonne MV Etoile was bound for Bristol, its GM cargo destined to be used as animal feed for the dairy farms which supply milk to Britain's biggest supermarkets. Four climbers boarded the Panamanian registered vessel from a jet boat using climbing hooks.
Hanging by ropes from the ship's sides and foremast, they unfurled banners reading saying 'STOP GM IMPORTS.' The Etoile was unable to continue safely and was forced to go to anchor off the Welsh coast at Rhoose. After delaying the ship for two days, the action ended when police landed by helicopter and removed two activists hanging over the propellers at the stern of the ship. The Etoile was then able to continue it's journey into Bristol, where the remaining climbers were removed from the mast and arrested.
This action is the latest development in our campaign against the major supermarkets who, despite repeated promises, have so far failed to remove GM-fed products from their lines. Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda and Safeways all sell own-brand milk from cows fed on American genetically-modified crops.

YOU CAN HELP by calling Sainsburys customer care line 0800 63 62 62 and asking when we can have non-GM milk in our local store. Or ring your local Sainsburys on Hull 01482 562185.

Current Affairs - Tony Blair lives, David Kelly dies
By Martin Deane
Lord Hutton was chosen by Blair. Lord Hutton was given his brief by Blair. Lord Hutton has whitewashed the Government and scapegoated the BBC. Blair conned us to go to war and the Hutton Report is a smokescreen. Hutton was a major event in itself, but the real issue is - and remains - responsibility for war. Today no blame Read more...

Current Affairs - America - no magic rabbit to pull out of the Iraqi hat By Martin Deane
I heard a story recently. A Labour MP met with Blair over Iraq. Tony asked how things were in his constituency. He replied "I've had 3 letters in support of the war - and 350 against!" Blair, unfazed, said "Don't worry, the people will forget once the war is over." We want UK troops out of Iraq. Get them out. Bring them home. End this monstrosity of lending Read more...

Things which happened in the thirties flutter by me like calendar leaves in an old movie and I try to catch some of them as they fly. Opinions - A Call for Peace By Michelle Dee Clark
Martin Luther King had a dream. His dream was crushed by jack booted, hooded ignorance. There has always been wrong in this world. From the trials in Scottsboro* Alabama in the 1930's to more recent events in Jasper Texas in 1998**. We are all guilty. When you talk of Kosovans and Iraqi's you focus on what the media want you to then project that onto everyone, be it ethnic minorities or anyone Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - Waddington International Airshow - June 26th and 27th 2004 By Tony
I travelled to the Airshow with trepidation, as the weather forecast was for cloud and rain and the prospect of no flying loomed large. As all aircraft/Airshow enthusiasts know, the noise and smell of fuel excites the senses and one hurries Read more...
