Memories of the Royal and Ancient City of Hull
By Maurice Fairfield

Now if you are an Ull Kid
Or if you used to be one
No matter where you wander
Or how long you're gone
Then from your deepest psyche
Memories you'll cull
Of Hull
I've been to distant places
Walked in foreign lands
Where skies were blue and breezes warm
I've trodden golden sands.

But always I remembered
The muddy Humber brown
And wished to tread again
The rainy streets of my home town.
'Cause life is never dull
If you're living in Hull
The happiest place in the world

My cup of joy is full
And I give you no bull
You'll see me marching proudly
with my banner unfurled
Cause I love Hull
I've seen the lights of San Francisco
Over the bay
The Taj Mahal by moonlight is lovely they say
But Wilberforce's column simply blows me away.
And it's in Hull.

The million lights of Broadway
Are amazingly bright
In France the Eiffel tower is a wonderful sight
But I'll take Hessle Road on a Saturday night.
The heart of Hull.
I haven't got the time to list the places I love
The Humber Bridge and Rayner's Pub
And heavens above,
The queen of watering places as she frowns at her square

The East Park boating lake, the Splash Boat
None can compare
And then the crowning glory
I'm talking Hull Fair
Where else but Hull?
Not all of them are still around
Like Hull Brewery Beer
Arundel Street The Tivoli and others I fear
But we've still got Queens Gardens,
Hammonds and The Pier - All part of Hull

Down High Street there's museums
The Deep and what's more
Cilla's ThisisUll.com
Moves Hull to the fore
Good old Hull
Now when I hang my clogs up
After fixing peoples' bogs up
For nearly half a lifetime or thereabouts
Then like a homing gull,
My soul will fly to Hull
And it'll be my final happy whereabouts

Now I'm running short of rhymes so I'll quietly mull
On all the things I recall that typify Hull
She's never been a lady
She's a battered old trull
But she's Hull.
