The Price of Oil
By Maggie Clegg
|
Eyes are blinded, stinging, burning,
Heart is thumping, feeble, failing,
Wings are cold, clammy, weak,
Can't draw a breath through tar-bunged beak.
The innocent birds die by the score
To lie, pathetic, on the shore
Where their violated bodies mingle
With tainted flotsam on stinking shingle.
Whilst beneath the greasy surface
The consuming death comes to menace.
Unseen there by human eye
Countless communities piteously die.
Climate changes, ice shelves crumble,
Causing penguin chicks to tumble
Into icy seas to drown,
No feathers fledged, still in their down.
Where polar bears now proudly pace
Will one day be an empty waste.
As seasons skew, balance alters
Nature's miracle of symmetry falters.
Battles rage over oil-rich land
Precious lifeblood stains the sand.
Ask not, my friend, what oil is worth,
The price is high, it costs the earth.

And although it's not PC
I giggle a bit, 'cos I know instinctively

Cause less terror in the victim's eye?
Does the searing pain feel different

Poetry - Dreams By Darren Sant

A wavery image flutters before a bleary eye,
You reach for it,
In vain you try to make sense of the image,
Freud & Jung laugh at your attempts,
Does it bode well for the future?

Once you've heard one story, you'll want to hear more

Entranced by the people emerging from the South,
Telling stories in the morning, living mouth to hand to mouth.

It's August, but the adverts already bawl,
Come, consume this festive Yule!
Why be different? Follow that trend,
And get to the shops to spend, Spend, SPEND!
To get the kids something fantastic,
Don't stress with wonga, just flash ya plastic.
