A Smoke and a Lady
By Lee Cassanell

Two glasses of baileys
and a liquor I cannot pronounce
We sat in the Kitchen
while others were sleeping
somewhere at the back of the house.

It all seemed familiar
She poured a tall vodka
and told me that she was in love

I listened intently
She touched my hand gently
then spoke of the man she gave up

A student of blues
since around twenty two
I could empathise well with her plight

The guy had proposed
with a ring and a rose
and a bottle of Champagne on ice.

She had stared at him hard
He was solvent and sharp
educated with prospects and money

But despite all of that
He did not make her laugh
and she craved someone carefree and funny

I reached for the rum
flicked the ash with my thumb
well aware of the hint in her words

I'd been here many times
In the noir of the night
and I'd learnt a few things from those girls.

I looked in her eyes
Said that I sympathized
but sometimes it is wise to play safe

He might not be the Fonz
but it's you that he wants
so at least he's impeccable taste.

I poured two from the pitcher
Would you mind if I kissed you?
She asked feeling sure of my call

In a frenzy of fervor
Our lips smashed together
as we fought our way down to the floor.

The rest is outrageous
No walls could contain us
We ripped and we rolled and we ravaged

When the scratching had ceased
she re-buttoned her jeans
I considered proposing a marriage

A few hours later
I woke on the Sofa
with her fast asleep on my chest

She purred like a Tiger
Her hair smelt of lager
and I tasted death on my breath.

I laid there half dazed
for what seemed like three days
but I wouldn't have moved if you'd paid me

And though years have long passed
since we loved and we laughed
I remember the smoke and the lady.......
