Best Before Date
By Joe Hakim

She comes
cutting through me
and for a moment,
I don't think about
who
or what,
I should
or shouldn't be.

Inside her mouth:
her tounge
her teeth,
search me
prepare me for the
sweet release.

Tangled up like
Ducks in fishing line,
we writhe and struggle
to find something
before we drown
before we die.

Don't try to
solve anything
or prove anything,
just be content with the
change we've stolen from the
pocket of time
when we saw him
drunk on the street.

Soon
it will become stale,
like the bread I bought
last week, and left
in the cupboard
thinking I'd use again
but never did.
