Karma Bonfire
By Joe Hakim

I wanted to be alone
so I disconnected the phone
days ago

switched off the TV
because I didn't want to see
the blood flow

shredded all my clothes
and threw them out of the window
onto the street

gathered up my books
took one last look
at a collection I'd never complete

smashed my furniture with an axe
and then I relaxed
for a while

before pulling the pictures off the wall
threw them all
on the pile

I thought of her, Thought of you
thought of them, my family too
thought about the past

times when it went wrong
times when I tried to be strong
and how it didn't last

the bitter taste
of no time left to waste
because it's run out

stripping away
the stench of life's decay
all the things I thought I couldn't live without

the junk I accumulated
the existence I created
in a comfortable trap

mortgage, bills and bank accounts
massive debts and small amounts
the economic bitch slap

removing the outer shell
the stain of cash, the money smell
my only legacy is wages

a life employed
a life destroyed
a life spent in cages

don't really know who I am
never made any plans
like things to do before I die

I was lost in a forest of compromise
didn't utilise
didn't grow, didn't even try

makes no difference now
doesn't matter how
doesn't matter why

the purity of sealed fate
just sit and wait
and stare at the sky

tomorrow is just another day
then we will make way
for whatever's next

we've had our turn
and now everything must burn
and that includes all our regrets
