Sleaze Queens - Inside Story, Outside World at Dukes March 3rd 05. (3/4)
By Michelle Dee
(1/4), (2/4), (3/4), (4/4)

The girls are taking a year out after completing courses in Politics, History and English before they go to University next year. The girls defend their choices of subject by pointing out that the songs they play have both historical references and political messages within them.

Napoleon and a track by Dogs Die in Hot Cars are both mentioned to underline the tenuous links between the two worlds. The music is the flipside of the coin. It's the sleazy slide of the coin giggles Kat.
I had done a little preparation for this piece by investigating the dictionary definition of sleaze, sleazy. It literally means: slovenly, slatternly or tawdry.

A slattern was a slovenly women; she probably didn't scrub her front step of a morning that sort of thing. They positively delight in this description and add, sordid, to the list of words. They stop short of the X-rated moniker.
The Sleaze Queens are reaching a critical point in their short careers that means their brand of up and coming sleazy songs are getting known; they are gaining some thing of a following, and soon could find themselves very much in demand.
Mel intends to read politics next year but wants to keep working on the music scene Djing and promoting new music. Right now the girls crave DJing all the time and in as many places as possible.

They prefer playing at venues where they can see the crowds enjoying their music, dancing and having a good time. Essentially they are looking to the crowd as to know whether they are playing the right stuff; if no one is giving them any reaction how can they know. They loved playing at the recent Glitterati gig at Silhouette and feel that night was one of their best to date.
They admit to being told off for playing a Glitterati track before the band were due to come on stage, but they said in their defence, that they always play the band so were not really altering anything.
The duo have come across a few setbacks to fulfilling their ambitions; they have found it difficult to get slots at nightclubs due to some DJs being unwilling to give up their hard fought gigs.
They realize that everyone has to make a living but the music scene should run on a supply demand basis. If the crowds want sleaze then they should get sleaze. If they want chart fodder, then they can go to Waterfront. Simple. The sleaze's manage all their own technical stuff woman-fully and only rely on help if they get really stuck.
The Sleaze Queens have come a long way in a short space of time, from the three-men-staring days and find that most people, especially the male clubbers, are pretty excepting of female DJs. Mel and Kat report, that surprisingly, it is a few of the girls who seem to take issue with the idea of them Djing.

They feel that these girls have a touch of the, I could do that mentality and are possibly jealous?
However, as usual the slightly receding, male dominated, top heavy industry machine has a long way to go to catch up with the rest of us. That is why we continually need people like Sparkly Mel, and Sultry Kat, to challenge the norms, break from convention; give people the belief that they too can achieve whatever they want, regardless of gender, creed or colour.
The girls identify heavily with the clothes they wear and belong to the vintage fashion scene. They shop in places like the Chinese Laundry seeking out classic dresses and belts.

Mel is dressed very rock n roll chic today in burnt-tangerine, print dress, soft boots possibly stolen and a lime green, bolero-style cardigan. She has accessorised her outfit with a thin belt and a shiny M pendant.
Meanwhile Kat is sat, sipping a cold drink, relaxing in comfy jeans, sweater and the obligatory scarf. Both girls love dressing up and having fun with clothes; they fondly remember gems from their wardrobes when the conversation moves on to fashion. The Sleaze Queen look is created by matching a vintage dress and belt with a big coat, Cowboy boots finish the outfit perfectly.
If you can't get cowboy boots, any boots that you have in your possession that aren't strictly yours will suffice. The ultimate sleazy accessory is of course; the must have Sleaze Queen badge available to the general public soon.

The girls have a simple rule that is throw it all together, don't worry about it and it will work.
How easy that sounds, if only we could all be like that instead of being tied to labels and feeling that we must be representative of some over priced, fashion house.
