The Johnsons - A Band Is Born (3/3)
By Michelle Dee
(1/3), (2/3), (3/3),

The Johnsons second gig was at the new Sweet n Sour night at Silhouette where they played to a good crowd. A certain Mr. Weller had been jamming with some cats at the Ice Arena that night, so a lot of the crowd from there turned up for Sweet n Sour. I wasn't there sadly, so can't comment on how their second ever gig was. Unlike some other reviewers, I don't have the ability to write about a gig I'm not present at.
However they informed me; the crowd had a good time, that they liked the atmosphere, they especially liked the walkway on to the stage.
Given time and more gigs The Johnsons will grow in stature. With a never say die attitude they will, in time, be making waves of their own within our local scene. Of course they would love to get signed but Danny modestly says I want people like us, to like us and have fun along the way.

They plan to endlessly rehearse together, and get tight as hell (it can be done, ask 59 Violets) then with the best sound possible go into the recording studio and do themselves justice. The last thing they want is a sub-standard recording misrepresenting their considerable talents.
There is of course a musical revolution exploding both locally and nationally. Teens and twenty-somethings all over the country are forming bands and getting themselves heard. Every so often one of them really has something worth hearing. I know The Johnsons are already starting to stand out amongst the many bands on the scene at the moment. To be able to perform as well as they do after just three gigs, they got to have something special about them.
Matty has progressed on to travelling up and down the frets of his bass and states he wants to be just like Lemmy his idol; he's bought Best of Motorhead and loves Ace of Spades. Tim, on an even scarier note, prefers Jim Morison's fatalism on In The End; he says it means a lot to him. Matt is firmly stuck in a bygone era too; an eye for a bargain- £7 for fifty-four Ramones songs you can't go wrong- and a penchant for God Gave Rock n Roll by mega stars Kiss.

As for Danny, he perhaps gives me the most concern; he likes nothing more than listening to Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles at full volume in his car, singing John Lennon's lyrics like some demented dark priest.
Danny explained to me it's a song about the Necronominum (The Book of the Dead) and has backwards guitars on and stuff.
The Johnsons, apart from being just a tad out of the ordinary, are:

Matt- lead vocal/rhythm guitar
Tim- Drums
Danny- lead guitar
Matty- bass

They do not have a website as yet, give 'em chance, but the minute they do I shall tell all you feverish fans.
They have gigs during March at The Sesh and White Room Sunday 13 March with Red Line To Exit.

Music Reviews - Radio in the Raw By Cilla
It's a local radio station. Ok, it's the BBC so with that comes plenty of kudos. But it's BBC Radio Humberside - a place I have to admit that I'd steered clear of, probably since its inception, as a not-cool place to be. In those days there was nothing but Radio 1. And Raw Talent is a local live radio show. It's so local, you could see Alan Raw, it's presenter and Read more...

Band Interviews - Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 22/07/2004 Mad Action Interview By Andy Dykes
After the show I go backstage. Admittedly it's partly to use the toilet, but also to catch up with the bands, particularly Mad Action, with whom an interview has been arranged. The lead singer and guitarist/backing-vocalist from Kasabian are immediately welcoming, allowing me to use their toilet without fear of violence or harassment. Read more...
