Introducing Jimmy "Eyes" Andrews (1/2) By Michelle Dee

Jimmy Andrews plays guitar, Jimmy Andrews plays bass, Jimmy Andrews can sing. Jimmy is sometimes known as Jimmy Eyes. If you have been down to Durty Nellies in the old town for the Band Apart night on a Wednesday run by Dave Elf ably supported by Rosie from the Mainbrace on Beverley Road then you may well have already seen him in action.

Jimmy started playing guitar when he was sixteen years old now twenty-two he is looking to build upon a passion for playing to a crowd. He was a young man of seventeen when he first played in front of an audience giving them his own interpretation of hero Bruce Springsteen. During the set he kept his eyes closed the whole time, but soon after he grew more and more comfortable playing in front of people saying, "It felt natural being on stage playing in front of people."

At the age of eighteen Jimmy went off to University to study Politics and put his musical aspirations behind him in favour of the academic life. After leaving University three years later he sought and found employment; he now works with autistic children finding and implementing ways to improve their standard of life. A position he says is both rewarding and fulfilling. After hearing about the current band scene and in particular bands like The Fifty- Nine Violets and Turismo he sought a way to be come involved in music once more. He found inspiration from David Elf's approach to promoting new talent.

In particular the way David shows no discrimination to any artist, musician style of play or field of music. This all encompassing attitude to music fitted very much with Jimmy's own eclectic musical taste.

To illustrate this he explains that he doesn't believe you should discriminate about listening to other styles when you play music. He goes on to say you can learn so much from listening to other artists and genres. He does have his favourites however. Bruce is The Boss he states proudly second only to Bob Dylan he continues. He also lists bands spanning the last three decades including U2 and Razorlight as sources of inspiration.

Up until recently Jimmy was nurturing a music project called The Chicolinis. This gave him a vehicle to put his song writing skills to the test both lyrically and musically. Although some progress was made nothing was ever recorded.

Having looked and heard the current crop of bands in Hull coming to play Band Apart and because of the nature of the jam sessions on the night - Jimmy gets the opportunity to play alongside many different artists almost like an impromptu session musician. If you have ever gone to the night you will know that it is a very relaxed affair with many different people getting up to play.

Even I got up there once to deliver a shaky version of the Radiohead winner Creep taken from the debut album Pablo Honey. I was accompanied on bass by Jimmy, David Elf on guitar and backing vocals and on drums the Mighty Rosie (said with a broad Yorkshire accent). The four of us managed to get through the song and even raised some cheery applause when we finished; an experience I'd like to repeat though Thom Yorke needn't start worrying.
