An Interview with Neils Children (1/4) By Caroline Murphy

(1/4), (2/4), (3/4), (4/4).

Ok, so it's official, Neils Children rocked Cari's World! Yup, the Earth moved, and all that stuff... and that was just the sound check. I caught up with John, James and Brandon on their first visit to Wolverhampton from the Big Smoke, as they headlined at the Little Civic (All those of you who went to see Papa Roach missed out big time!). Before they played their set, they let me sneak into their dressing room to record an interview with them.

Having scanned some of their previous interviews, I got the impression that they were going to be a band of hot heads who were going to break the rock mould with their desire not to be stereotyped, and their political message focussing on the dark emotions. However, what greeted me were three of the nicest and most sociable people you could ever hope to meet (That'll kill their street cred. for a while!).

Cari: What's the significance of the name Neils Children, and why no apostrophe? (I didn't do English A level for nothing you know!) Brandon: We took the idea from being three kids from like suburban England, where nothing happens and you kind of have to break out to make something of your life. Where we're from unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on what ever way you look at it no-one really does that, and it's kind of like everyone in that kind of environment, how they live, they kind of represent that kind of thing, and we're the ones that are breaking out of it. So we kind of count ourselves as being the children of this whole mess of nothing and waste. John: I don't know about the apostrophe, I think it's more style, cos it wouldn't look as good if it had the apostrophe.

Cari: A bit non conformist then? Brandon: Yeah and Neils not an actual person, and it's like we're not the only ones, and everyone that does the same as us and breaks out, and does something with their lives is part of that thing, they are the children, everyone, not just us. All are welcome.

Cari: Where did you all meet - how did the band form? James: Well I met John originally when we used to go to this club in London, called The Purple Pussycat Club, which is like a 60's Psych place, about 6 or 7 years ago. Most of the people who went there were in their late twenties or early thirties and me and John were 2 of the few people there who were quite young. I was like nineteen at the time, John was sixteen. Brandon: Whippersnappers weren't you. James: We were... John: I remember when I first met James, it was in the Purple Pussycat. I'd finished my GCSE's, and you came in with your girlfriend at that time and I bought a bottle of champagne to celebrate.... Brandon: Celebrate the exams, not the girlfriend, yeah?
