That's how it was in those days. The nice thing about it was, there was no trouble - people didn't ever fight, everything was good fun.
I remember we used to finish at twenty to eleven so all the kids could get to the bus station to get the last bus home. There was no hooliganism; a different culture, really.
He was a lovely, lovely man Sammy Evans, we still keep in touch with his wife but he sadly died.
|
I remember the day I left Hull. I went, I left it all - The Gondola. There were some priceless artefacts there. Some of the groups had left demo discs, which in today's market would be worth big money.
There was a wonderful band from Scotland called the Alex Harvey Band. Wonderful.
They made a record, Blind Man - it was exceptional, they came to us in 1962,
then there was Keith Kelly, another wonderful singer. I think he was from Lincolnshire.
My friend Martin phoned me up one day and said he'd got a fabulous group -
Rocking Henry and the Hayseeds.
|
|
But they needed a piano.
He wanted a baby grand piano so I went to Gough and Davy's and explained the situation.
Well, they said, they're worth a lot of money, we'd love to lend it to you but can
you guarantee that it won't be damaged?
I said, Leave it to me, I promise it'll be fine. So they delivered the piano and
Martin came over with the group. They set up all their equipment and unbeknown
to me, they put covers on each of the keys of the piano. So when they started
playing, the keys were all flying up in the air. I was screaming and going bananas -
What the hell? He was another Jerry lee Lewis. Oh, we had some wonderful times.'

John Science, the man who had served up a thrilling mix of live bands, frothy coffee and cokes
to The Gondolas' clientele for two years, left Hull to travel around Europe.
He worked in various hotels gaining experience in the service industry and learning the importance of excellent customer provision, whilst working in luxury hotels in Spain and the Channel Islands.
|
John's father, who had been Lord Mayor of the City of Hull during1958/59, owned a snack bar
in Jameson Street called The Pioneer Café. In 1976 when John returned to Hull, he took over the café and armed with all his new found knowledge, he set about turning the old Pioneer building into the very first fast food bar of its kind in Britain.
Ahead of its time, The Pioneer café was one of the first in the country to
serve soft ice cream from a machine and offer 100% pure beef burgers!
|
|
|
John went into business with a man called Peter Roger and in 1979 the first fast food joint called Yankee Burger opened for business in Hull, in the old Pioneer building on Jameson Street. This was long before McDonalds and Burger King, even before the first Wimpy Bar arrived in Hull.
Yankee Burger was the front runner of the fast food market and used the entertainment industry to make that connection between the market base, the products and the place.
|
|
Yankee Burger was supplied by Billy Boy Foods. John would always insist on the best, freshest produce. It may have been fast food; burgers, fries and hotdogs etc but quality ingredients were used to make the new food stuffs.

People, Interviews - Interview with Tokyo Dragons By Michelle Dee
|
|
Tokyo dragons are definitely not like The Smiths, lets just clear that one up.
They play a brand of loud ballsy U.S. rock circa 1995, maybe like G.n'R. or
Aerosmith with a bit of Kiss thrown in.
It's been a while since I checked out the mainstream rock scene.
These guys have been going for four years and hail from N.W. London

They look like The Clash used to. They look like The Stone Roses' evil twins.
They look like a gang.
And they are as tight as a gang, finishing each other's sentences and putting across their
points individually, knowing that they speak for the band as a whole.
Acting as spokesman Lloyd says What I fuckin' hate about music magazines is

So I guess
