Do you think the advancement of quality in today's digital camera market is enabling people,
who usually struggle to get good shots from cameras that use 35mm rolls of film for example,
to take better photos?
For most of my editorial work, the digital camera has become an invaluable piece of equipment.
Photographs that are taken at 3pm can be ready for press by 3:10pm - it's perfect.

For example, at last year's Toronto Film Festival I found that I had been the only
photographer to get a shot of Tommy Lee Jones leaving a particular film premiere.
An editor from the TV show Entertainment Tonight wanted to use the exclusive photo
and within an hour it went from my camera onto an international television show.
For people new to photography, the digital camera is great.
They are relatively cheap and affordable and once the photographer has turned
the camera to the manual setting, they have the ability to experiment with a
whole range of techniques and instantly see the results.
Is there one single image that you have captured that you are most proud of above all the others?

The photographs I am most proud of remind me what it is like to be a photographer
and get the image you set out for. I have a rather unspectacular photograph of a
bridge stretching over part of the suburbs of Abu Dhabi, but it was spectacular
for me personally as it was taken while a security guard was shouting and waving
a gun at me. Another time I was in Beirut taking pictures of an abandoned building
that wasn't quite as abandoned as I had thought; I was taken to a military post
and released 10 minutes later with my camera and photograph intact.

What are the best and worst things about being a photographer?
For me, the best thing about it is that you get to meet and work with some really
great people who are interested in the same things as you. If you're lucky, it's
also a great way to travel and see places that you would ordinarily not have access to.
Above all, as a
photographer you have the responsibility and ability to provide work that reveals your
thoughts on the world and there aren't many jobs that can do that.
Have you ever had any awkward occasions when you've had to deal with
unco-operative models on fashion shoots?
Well, not on fashion shoots. I purposely shoot models that are just
starting out in the business to make sure they are unaffected.
Surprisingly, the most difficult people I've had to photograph have
all been Hollywood actors or actresses.
Last year I was shooting on the new Anne of Green Gables film set for
AOL and Shirley MacLaine, who has been in the business for decades, was
directing me on how to do my job. She told me what angle to shoot her at
and said I could only shoot if I had a specific lens filter on my camera
(to make her look less weathered.) She was also very unfriendly and proceeded
to be extremely rude to the interviewer I was working with.
