Lights! Camera!! Action!!! Christopher Manson, a photographer from Driffield, has in recent years had work published in a plethora of high-profile magazines and newspapers such as The Observer On Sunday, Time Out and Hello. Having lived and worked in Dubai and Toronto since graduating from university, he is currently back in the East Riding, following up his latest projects, one of which has intimately focused on the aftermath of 2007's close-to-home floods in Hull.

Here, in an exclusive interview with Steve Rudd, he chats openly and honestly about life behind a lens, revealing his passion for documentary photography above all else... Hey Chris How Are Things? Good, I'm taking a break in the UK for the next few months to edit and promote a documentary project I've just finished shooting. The documentary took six months to shoot and tells the story of a troupe of Burlesque dancers as they toured Western Canada last October. I'm hoping to have the work exhibited in Toronto this summer.

So you hail from Driffield, but you have in recent years worked a s a photographer in places as far flung as Dubai Beirut, Japan and Toronto. After graduating from University did you find that work came to you, or did you have to actively seek it your self? I had to seek it out. I have found that in order to successfully work in the publishing industry you have to be good at - and I hate to use this term - networking. A large majority of the work I have had published has resulted from me proactively seeking it out.

My first job was no different. I graduated from Newcastle upon Tyne, and to get my foot in the door of the publishing industry I took a job at a magazine called The Crack in the hell that was their advertising department. From my connection with the magazine, I was able to produce, in my spare time, work that the photographic department would use. In addition to populating my Professional portfolio, the job provided me with the income and publishing experience that I would later need for my next job in Dubai. Did you aspire to be a photographer from a young age? I've been interested in photography since the age of about sixteen, but it wasn't until I enrolled in my first photography course that I realized I wanted to take it on professionally. At Hull University I was taught by a truly inspirational lecturer called Matt Winterlich, an Irish born photographer; he always seemed to have a copy of Image,Music and Text by Roland Barthes on his person for quick reference. He was the one who encouraged me to read everything I could get my hands on, regardless of the photographic merit. He stressed the potential that the photographic image had to visually describe what I was thinking; that is something for which I'm eternally grateful.
