Beautiful South Exclusive - An Interview with Front Man, Paul Heaton (3/3)
By Julia Grant
(1/3), (2/3), (3/3).

Do you feel that some of your lyrics are under appreciated or that some of your best have been overlooked? Personally, I think more recently that Half Of Him (from TBS's 2004 album, Gaze) didn't get as much recognition as it deserved.
Half Of Him is a song that I wrote in it's entirety. Yes, I thought it was a little under received, but not compared to some other stuff that I buy. I've had an equal amount of songs overrated as I have underrated. For that, I feel in quite a privileged position. Better for them to like your personality and hate your looks, than ignore everything you say whilst making you wear a bag over your head!
One of my favourite tracks from your last album, Superbi, is Bed Of Nails. It's sung beautifully (a duet between Paul & Alison) and the lyrics are quite touching. What is it about?
It's about sacrifice. The man is saying I'll happily exchange this perfect life I have for a difficult one, and that is regardless of the pain that that may involve. What's touching for many is downright offensive in the leper colony that we call the charts!

Has it ever felt awkward recording songs for everyone to hear, that can often contain some quite personal and perhaps revealing lyrics?
No.

Do you ever find that people judge you a lot by you lyrics?
Maybe people think I'm cleverer than I am. I'm not at all convinced in the "fans'" argument that writing good lyrics makes you a better person. It is because of my fallibilities as a human, that I'm able to write lyrics, not despite them. I hope people realize that when I wrote "A Little Time", "Blackbird" etc that it wasn't from a higher place, but I'd also been (and continue to)go through mistakes.
It's said that you're an instant judge of character, is this true?
Yes, I tend to judge early. It's part of my job. One, by early, I mean within the first twenty seconds. Two, to judge a person isn't to profile them. I wouldn't look at someone's skin colour or haircut! More their eyes, the way they hold their mobile, or the height of their left ear lobe. As a barometer, it's worked in my favour. I'm living with the people I want to, I have fun being bitchy with friends and I'm a nightmare to mark at corners.

Just a couple more questions then, when you were on tour, what sort of things would be on your rider?
3 banks of four
4 local ales
4 local crisps
And the other four friends who I formed the band with!

Other than that?
Smack for Sean
Charlie for Steady
Speedballs for Rothers
And a fine glass of Rioja for Hamster (via drip)
Have you heard about the musical, The Slide, that's based on Beautiful South songs? Do you fancy going to see it?
Songs taken out of one person's context and put in another's appeals to me as much as Abba Abba Hey - The Swedish Ramones.

There's also a book coming out called "Book For Whoever - Memories and stories of songs by The Beautiful South" , where fans have written about what a particular song means to them. What do you think to that idea?
It would be nice to read for me, because I never truly understood, and still don't fully understand my value. I mean that not as false modesty, but more as a misreading of a situation I didn't fully understand. And the back of my mind, you see, was a feeling that I gained from my dad, that maybe it wasn't ok to take praise. That praise should somehow always be deflected.
And one last question; "Got one note to last all week" - how much was it?
A screwed up fiver or a rolled up fifty!

People, Interviews - Interview with Tokyo Dragons

Tokyo dragons are definitely not like The Smiths, lets just clear that one up. They play a brand of loud ballsy U.S. rock circa 1995, maybe like G.n'R. or Aerosmith with a bit of Kiss thrown in.
