An Interview with Sandi Thom (1/2) By Steve Rudd

Since releasing the chart-storming hit I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker, Sandi Thom's career has gone from strength to strength. Such a tune featured on her debut album, Smile... It Confuses People. Now, Sandi is on the verge of unleashing her follow-up LP, Pink and The Lily, a record she's set to promote with a lengthy UK tour. It just so happens that Sandi is due to play at The Lamp in Hull on Wednesday 27th February. By no coincidence, Steve Rudd recently caught up with Sandi to discuss the excitement surrounding her forthcoming release, along with the unparalleled success of her profile-promoting webcasts amongst other hot topics...

Hey Sandi how are you doing? I'm very well thank-you; just in rehearsals at home for the tour.

In a nutshell how was 2007 for you? It was the year that brought me many things! I think I grew up quite alot last year. It was the year that I wrote and recorded the majority of the second album The Pink and The Lily; it was the year that I visited more countries than ever before in my life, and lived 8 months of that year on a tour bus! It was an amazing year.

Given the huge success of your debut album Smile...It Confuses People, did you feel any added pressure when it came to writing and recording songs for your new album Pink and the Lily? Well I had the added bonus of 7 extra months to start writing the second album as the first album was originally completed in October 2005 and was meant for independent release until I got signed to RCA, then it was released in May 2006, so I had some extra time to benefit from. Also, The Pink and The Lily was predominantly recorded in the Basement which has been renovated into the Basement Studio since the webcasts.

So for me and my boyfriend Jake and our flatmate Duncan, who are the production team behind both my albums, it was very much a chilled-out, laid-back experience. We didn't have the pressures of the clock ticking down while we spent endless amounts of money on studio time and because we are all so close there was no nervousness or anxiety during the whole experience. Because I was out on the road for the majority of the year this is where I wrote most of the songs, drawing inspiration from so many of my experiences over the past two years. For want of a better word, I have to say it was a very 'organic' experience; everything just fell into place and I'm very proud of this album. Which tracks on Pink and the Lily are you most proud of and why? I would say I'm most proud of a song called Wounded Heart which was solely penned by me and is very much a true reflection of my inner feelings. I'm not usually one for sob stories so this was quite a revelation for me ... however, I'm equally proud of them all.
