An Interview With Nick Quantrill (3/3)
By Steve Rudd
(1/3), (2/3), (2/3).

Have you considered compiling all your novellas into one collection for release as a book, or do you prefer to publish your writing on the Internet via mediums such as thisisUll.com in order to maximize readership levels?

Having a book published is my ultimate goal. My thinking is, though - if you're going to take up jogging, you don't start by running a marathon!
To write a novel is going to take time as I learn how to put a story together and improve on specific techniques.

My aim is to build up to writing something of enough length and depth to be worth publishing. As such, the next novella will hopefully be double the length of Complicity. Whether I'm considered good enough to be published by a large company, or I self-publish is something I'm open-minded about. At the moment trying to obtain some feedback to help understand what works and what doesn't work is more important to me, and having my work exposed on thisisUll.com is a great help in achieving that.

Having Complicity serialised on thisisUll.com has also given me the opportunity to get involved in other projects. I knew I needed plenty of images to illustrate the story and I was extremely fortunate to be introduced to Roland Standaert. Roland has shot some amazing photography to accompany the story and it has really helped me to focus on visualising what I'm writing.
How many novellas have you actually written and have any of those featured anywhere other than on www.thisisUll.com , in case people reading this interview feel compelled to seek more of your stuff out?

Before Complicity I'd completed one novella and a handful of short-stories. With hindsight, I've realized that these were bad enough to never see the light of day again!
Since completing Complicity I've finished a few short stories and started work on a lengthier novella. Currently these stories are only featured on thisisUll.com, though it would be fantastic if I could get something placed on specialist crime-fiction websites.

It's something that I'm actively working on achieving. I'll certainly be sending the short-stories and the next novella to thisisUll.com though, but they're always available for free by simply emailing me at the address below.
Finally, what's next in line for you? Are you currently working on anything that's due to see the light of day any time soon? Also, have you set up your own website to promote your work?

Next in line is definitely to get cracking on the new novella. I have the main ideas firmly in place, but I need to research it and turn it into a viable plot.
I also have a few scraps lying around that will form the basis of short-stories, so I've got more than enough to keep myself busy with for the next few months.

Creating a website is something that I'm giving some thought to, but I need to develop some skills in that area first! Currently I have a page at www.myspace.com/hullcrimefiction which serves me well. The page contains samples, news and reviews, as well as the some of the photography that accompanies Complicity. I'm easily contactable and look forward to discovering what people think of the stories.

Thank you very much for your time Nick, and the best of luck in getting more of your stunning work published very soon.

Thanks very much for your time and interest!
