Do you prefer performing solo or as part of a band? I like both. The band is great because they are a lot of fun to play with. When you are on your own you can be self-centred! It's nice to do both. You seem to be very cool, calm and collected when on stage. Is that really the case or are you a bundle of nerves? I was nervous on Sunday (in support of Lucy Kaplansky at York's NCEM on December 16).

I was talking to Boo Hewerdine a while ago, and he said it was important to be relaxed and confident when you play. The more relaxed you are, the more the audience picks up on that. I always feel a little edgy, though. It's an odd thing - you have to be focused, but also enjoy it! You have released a number of albums over the years. Do you find that the song-writing and subsequent recording process gets easier with time and experience?

Actually. It's the reverse - your standards get higher and it becomes harder to hit the standard. What I have produced this year is far, far better than the music I was making in 1990 or 1991. What happens is that you become increasingly self-critical - I tried to apply the highest possible standards to the new album. In raising the bar you make it harder for yourself to fulfil that! You recently remarked that you'd love to see Bruce Springsteen in concert. Other than The Boss which musicians do you most admire...and why?

It's a long list: Abba, Dylan, Springsteen, Van Morrison for his soulfulness, John Mellencamp, Bruce Cockburn for the wonderful lyrics. Also love Thin Lizzy, The Waterboys. And Del Amitri. And Billy Bragg for the great songs and delivery. And Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell. Blue is one of my favourite albums, especially the song The Last Time I Saw Richard which is like a short story wrapped up in a song! Most of that list I have seen them play live. All great! Finally what have Miles Cain fans got to look forward to in 2008?

Don't think there will be an album, but will be playing - at Cottingham near Hull on 7th June, and also in June at the Beverley Folk Festival, compere of the late night venue there.
