Interview With Adrian Davis Writer Of The Slide Musical (3/3)
By Michelle Dee

(1/3),
(2/3),
(3/3).
How do the songs relate to the story, are they signposts to reflect characters state of mind or position they find themselves in at that moment in the story?
Yes definitely, certain songs just lend themselves to dramatic real life situations.
Others at times were very tricky for example in the song I think the Answer's Yes where was
I going to fit in about bombing the press etc? But I have.
One very famous song has been produced in their albums in a higher and lower key.
We have taken the original lower key version because the tone fits in better with the context of the scene.
Did you or the musical director feel a certain sense of responsibility when handling these much loved songs, almost like holding someone elses' lives work? Did you feel the hand of The Beautiful South upon your shoulders and the eyes of a million fans watching your every step?
Yes, I would certainly feel the eyes of the TBS fans will be on me and the Production team in particular the Saturday night which is made up of 70% of TBS fans.
I do feel a certain responsibility as does the MD Alison Canning, the Director Jane Darby and the
orchestrator Garry Bamford, because we wanted a balance of respecting the original pieces and creating something new.
Anyone who thinks they are going to see a cover band will be disappointed.
I have left those skills to the likes of Eddy Faulkner of The Beautiful Couch
www.thebeautifulcouch.co.uk
What kind of response did you get when first pitching the idea of a musical featuring TBS songs?
Response has always been mixed most of the bands forum members have been supportive some even gave out leaflets at their last few gigs.
The outline of the back stories for the three main characters could be seen as Heaton, Hemmingway and possibly Stead is that a fair interpretation, which leads to the question are the characters in anyway inspired by band members past or present?
As they say any connection between Messrs Heaton, Hemmingway, Stead and The Slide is purely coincidental.
What are your hopes, dreams and fears for the opening night and for the future of The Slide?
My hopes are that people do turn up to the show; my fears are that they do turn up but don't laugh in the right places.
My dream will be to see The Slide produced by other people in the future, starting perhaps with Hull the birthplace of this unique band.
... from a fans point of view, the ultimate dream would be to sit down with Paul and Dave and mull the idea over a few beers.
And I guess that I'll be paying because I think I owe them at least one!
