Refill Not Landfill
By Cilla

What do you think about the price of printer cartridges?
I can't afford them. My printer has long periods of rest between bouts of frenzied use while the colours still give any semblance of anything other than black and white. The very idea of the printer being useable is a treat for the whole family!

|
So this week, with the prospect of producing hundreds of www.thisisull.com pre-launch flyers, I visited Cartridge World at 34 Cottingham Road armed with my sad selection of dried up HP empties to see if they could be revived and refilled without costing both arms and both legs.
I've used the recycling envelopes provided at places like PC world for years (to do my bit to avoid contributing too much to the ink cartridge mountain) but not really investigated the re-use option before. Empty printer cartridges can be refilled or remanufactured by Cartridge World.
|
While I waited for the verdict on whether or not revival was an option for my cartridges, I noticed a petition on the counter:
'The Department of Trade and Industry is considering passing legislation that will enable cartridge manufacturers to produce cartridges that cannot be refilled…'
Can you believe that? Outrageous!
I spoke to John Clough, who runs the Cartridge World outlet. Companies such as his will be out of business should a new EU law be applied in the way the British government have chosen to interpret it. He told me that the issue is whether or not a printer cartridge is judged to be a 'consumable' or a piece of waste electrical equipment, which European law requires to be re-used or recycled.

Refill Not Landfill continued

If the DTI decides to go ahead with the view that printer cartridges are consumables, therefore not covered by the directive:
-
British companies employing over 2,000 people will be out of business within 3 years
-
An extra 20,000 tons of waste will go to landfill each year
-
as per usual, poor Joe Public gets charged ludicrous prices for their printer ink forever more
|
Scandinavian countries have decided that ink cartridges are covered by the directive and require cartridges to be made reusable. Why can't we?
If you feel as I do, that I wish to continue to save money and our environment, get down to see John Clough (34 Cottingham Road) and sign his petition which is to be presented to the House of Commons and in turn, assist the DTI in reaching the right decision.

Pave were the latest band to perform on the Thursday evening session in the Linnet and Lark and showed what an exciting development they are in the local music scene. It has been far too many years since a band in the city have actually looked determined to demand that people take notice of them.

Aircraft and Airshows - Concorde by Tony
|
|
On Friday 24th October 2003 the last fight of Concorde by British Airways as a fare paying passenger aircraft took place.
If you have flown on Concorde or have seen it in flight, you can understand what a great loss this will be to the nation. The aircraft, first airborne in 1969, was and is still out in front in design and technical innovation.

Sports - Ice Hockey by Matt
|
|
Since as far back as I can remember there has been something in my life. It is impossible to explain but it has always stood by me. Like some people cannot live without drugs, I can not live without ice hockey. For me it started back in 1991. In the previous Season the Seahawks managed to win the division one championship and how I wish I had seen that!

Before we start on our journey, let me give you a bit of background on Avebury.

As well as being a tourist spot, it is both a home and a gathering

Places to Visit - A day by the beach - Bridlington Harbour.

This Sunday I was spoilt for choice - either to visit a Buddhist centre in "Kilham"
or attend a strawberries and cream party. Opted to go and find Zen so duly arrived
with my offspring (Katie and Oliver) at my friend's house (Cilla) punctually (for
a change) at 11.30.
