Response To Steven Greendale's Article By Andrew Hampel

Hull has always been groundbreaking. From Amy Johnson and William Wilberforce to the invention of LCDs and the Venn diagram. Not to forget the first Ferro concrete bridge and public crematorium. I could go on. It is for these reasons I am always saddened that the image of Hull often promoted by those from outside and even worse, inside the city, is one of fish, prostitutes and underachievement.

I am even more saddened when innovative individuals who are trying their best to keep Hull out of the joke books have their work blasted without any real backup. I refer to the article by Steven Greendale which although compliments Ian Newton on his innovative book The Night Shift which continues the Hull tradition of fresh ideas, he blasts two other groups who are working very hard for their city.

Hull Truck and the Hull Blokes are relentless and committed in ensuring that a long-standing theatrical tradition in Hull is carried on, and that people can go out, enjoy a multi-textured night of entertainment with food, drink and friends before going home to read The Night Shift.

The Hull Blokes' last two runs at The Northern Academy of Performing Arts Studio 2 Theatre have both sold out to great acclaim, catapulting them from being a backroom pub writing group into a tight professional production company. Any inches the Blokes and Hull Truck gain in the press are also down to extreme hard work, and at the end of the day are to let people know there is more to do than watch reality TV and to get people enjoying Hull for all its greatness.

With this in mind I would like to hear about the trash and the rubbish he has seen recently from these ever evolving groups, and if he can back up his claims. I would also like to raise my hat and thank Hull Truck, Hull Blokes, NAPA Studio 2 Theatre, Hull New Theatre, Ian Newton and any other hardworking Hull pioneers for bringing our city back to life.
