Opinions
Rise of the Madmen (3/3)
By Lee Cassanell
(1/3), (2/3), (3/3).

There is even a theory to suggest that the rich adopted Christianity and encouraged its spread because it was an effective tool of social control. It kept the peasants in there place and made it easy for them to be used and exploited.

It's funny how Jesus is supposed to have turned over the money lenders tables and became the poster boy for the poor and needy when those very same people were expected to fill the collection plates with what little they had and sacrifice themselves in wars fought in his name.
History is littered with religious wars, people fighting and dying for the glory of Christianity and the preservation of the faith and the more cynical minded person may suggest that if you say to a commoner that they are killing in the name of a higher power he will fight because he wants to assure his place in the afterlife but if you told that same commoner that he is putting his life at risk so his rich masters can gain more power, land and wealth he might not be so willing to drive a sword through a Saracen's head.
It's 2005 and we are playing the same old games, living with the same old lies and nobody is doing anything about it. Who knows maybe next week George Bush or Tony Blair will hear a voice saying that should invade Iran or Syria and we'll go along for the ride. You see as long as religion is immersed in politics...as long as the Catholic Church has power the world will forever be divided and it's not a divide that can be physically broken down, it's not a high wall or electric fence, it's a psychological barrier that is stronger than the hardest steel.
If you have been taught from day one yours is the one true God and you haven't taken the time to question that then you believe it, even die for it because that is all you know and you're either unequipped or unable to imagine life without that belief.

People who have the power to make decisions for humanity should not have any fixed religious belief and especially a belief with the arrogance and ignorance of Christianity, a faith that has done far more bad then it has ever, EVER, done good.
Now I'm writing this because if the religious hatred laws are passed by the British Government everything I just said will be a criminal offence which will basically give lunatics protection against reality and allow them to say all kinds of nonsense safe in the knowledge that they have the right to preach and spread nonsense in whichever way they see fit and I strongly believe that is a massive triumph of stupidity over common sense.

These issues should be addressed and it is the right of every single living person to question the motivation of any individual in power who has an affect on their daily lives and if that person happens to follow an organised religion then they should be able to give a balanced and reasonable argument based on facts, not based on quotations taken from whatever document their faith considers to be divinely inspired.
It's time for a change but that change won't come unless people start examining the roots of society's problems, many of which have been damaged by figures who claim to be acting on behalf of God. Think about it his way. In this time of a global AIDS epidemic, mass over-population and increased teenage pregnancy the Pope still decrees on behalf of the almighty that Catholics should not use contraception of any kind.

Which just goes to show that even if the Christian God is the real deal...
He's a fucking idiot.

Opinions - I Don't Agree With That in the Workplace By 'Ull un
Whether you've been guilty of it yourself or experienced it as a consumer, it seems to be that an epidemic of ineptitude is sweeping the globe. The virus appears to care not about the host in which it embeds itself: ask for assistance Read more...

Opinions - Yoga By Andrea Longstaff
I enrolled in the yoga class at Park Avenue Adult Education Centre in September 2004 at the start of the new term for stress relief, or should that be release? The teacher Alison Carlisle is excellent. All of the people who attend the class would agree with that statement I'm sure. Read more...

Opinions - The Walk of Life By Trevor Edge
I hate cars. I love driving but I hate cars. No other singular human invention has caused me more grief than the car, except maybe beer. I've had a few (cars that is not beers) and the things are only there for one reason ... to bleed the bank account dry. Read more...

Opinions - North Bransholme - If It Ain't Screwed Down
By Mr A.N. Gry
What a sight. It just blows your mind when you wake in the morning and realise some bar-steward has been and robbed you again, the bikes have gone. For Christ's sake not again! This place could be nice if the thieves could sod off, and the parents of the kids who prowl in the night could Read more...

Opinions - When Technology Takes Over By Steve Rudd
Am I the only person left in Britain not to own a DVD player? For sure, I must be one of only a select number of people to be currently flogging the life out of their vintage VHS video recorders.. but I'm not all that bothered. At the end of the day, a movie is no different whether it is played in Read more...

Opinions - Youth Clubs? By Andrea Longstaff
Why is it that the only youth club in the Newland Avenue area opens at ridiculously limited hours? I went out for provisions (milk) the other evening and there were four teenagers sat on the outside stairs. I asked them what they were doing, they looked cold. Nothing really, so I asked them if they wanted a cuppa, they ended up coming in and Read more...

Around a 100 people gathered in Pearson Park on Saturday (18th September), for a Reclaim the Streets protest. Now there are a number of reasons why the ratio between protestors and police Read more...

Opinions - QUEER? Queer in the head..! By Rich Mills
I recently picked up a copy of a new zine called Queer. A new newsletter for the non steryotypes (sic). A supposed literary publication that can't spell stereotype is a bit crap, and that is only the front cover. The inside pages, most of them blank (like the mind of its author) are even Read more...

Opinions - What is Reclaim The Streets about Anyway? A Personal Perspective
Many moons ago in my misspent youth, I, like many others, used to have a problem with Authority and 'fought injustice' wherever I discovered it. So I joined others in the grand mass of those in the non-conformists uniform, and would march, relevant placard in hand, most Saturdays. These days the Read more...

Opinions - Musings By Mark Pollard
A couple of things that have perplexed me over the years: Firstly, why the link between heel bars and key cutting? They always seem to be combined under the same roof. I don't geddit. Potential for major calamities, too - imagine going in for a new heel on your brogues and ending up Read more...

Opinions - Pete Docherty Is Dead! By Rich Mills
The headline they all want to see! I've watched the development of what is a disturbing form of hero worship. The desire to see self-destruction in the flesh, is how I read many of the reviews I've read about Pete Docherty, Babyshambles, the Libertines new album, Read more...
