Hull By Wesy G

Over the years, my experience of Hull has been limited to 80 minute slots of rugby or trips through to the P & O dock. Until recently. Via my job I have been working in East Hull for several months and have been surprised, disappointed, fulfilled and benefited in equal measure. Yes, the stereotypes of Hullers being cynical, defensive etc often hold true but to be honest I struggle to find the reasons for the negativity, especially when the place is compared to other cities like Leeds - yes that capital of the city region.

Ask yourselves, people of Hull - and those who knock you; in how many places can you be on a beach half an hour from home? Do other places have the undeniable quality architecture of the Old Town or the kind of free experience offered by the museums? Few places still have the wealth of independent shops found along Holderness Rd, Hessle Rd and the street scene that goes with them.

Ok, the place has its rough edge but having worked in Leeds, Manchester, Doncaster I can tell you any of those cities have the same problem issues.

I realise the legacy of guaranteed employment will linger for years (my home town is a former coal town and has pulled round) but many initiatives are on-going to address those things. Not to mention the huge regeneration works at St Stephens and the river corridor, new housing all over the place, and the quality development of Victoria dock and marina area.

Just to finish, I know of no other town that's retained its park keepers and (uniquely?) has staffed public toilets - the ones near the Minerva pub ought to be a tourist attraction in their own right. Polished brass, even potted plants! We outsiders do notice these things. Hope to be involved with the town for some time to come, job willing. Good on yer.
