Channel 4's Best and Worst (2/2)
By Mark Pollard
|
(1/2),
(2/2).
|
When people talk about Hull and its problems, what they are actually talking about (whether
they know it or not) is inner city Hull and council estate Hull and their problems.
You might as well talk about (or make television programmes about) the problems of any inner city, or the council estates of any city, because they're all the bloody same.
|
|
|
And in anticipation of those who would respond by telling me to lighten up, as it's only television - a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun, designed to stimulate some debate - I'd just like to tell you why it's no laughing matter. Lots of people in this city are working bloody hard, in many different ways, to regenerate the place and tear down the scandalously inaccurate and misleading stereotypes that have been attached to (usually northern) cities like Hull, by the South East-based media.
|
|
Some of those people are doing it from formal, paid, regeneration posts; others, like the good folk here
at thisisUll.com, are just doing their bit in the way they live, the events they organise, the things they write and the word they spread. They all have one thing in common this morning, though: they are all hurt and angry at the way they have seen our great city dismissed as being a place fit only for the poor, stupid, immoral, unhealthy and uninspired.
The ignorance and throw-away perceptions displayed by those responsible for the programme are surely an insult to their standing as otherwise intelligent people.

If you live in Hull and want a telephone line you are very lucky as you don't
have to call on BT or any of the other companies who claim to be cheap.
Kingston Communications are cheaper that any other phone provider in England.

I have something to share about Hull or Ull! My experience was generally good although a bit sad.
I come from Greece and in 2001 I arrived in Hull to start studies at Lincoln University
which at the time was called The University of Lincolnshire and Humberside.

Articles - Is Hull really No.1 Crap Town?
|
|
By Jane Foster
As you may have seen in the media, Hull has been voted top of the list of the 50 crappest towns to live in, within the UK.
If I may point out from the beginning, without being pedantic, that Hull is not a town but a city - therefore it is not eligible for this title anyway. But for the sake of argument I'll carry on.

Articles - Hull's Beauty By DJ Chris Plant

I decided to take a look at Hull's brand new Beauty Clinic and Hair Salon, BeautyMed and A Cut Above (having heard very good things about them both). I needed the makeover too.
BeautyMed is a new clinic situated at Suite 2, 173 Ferensway, Hull (Opposite the railway station).

Articles - Made In Hull - Part Four - Schooldays By Maurice Fairfield

My first day at school is still vivid in a misty sort of way. We were all given a little
child-sized blackboard, with a tiny blackboard eraser and some chalk. So far so good.
Unfortunately I thought it was mine and when they wanted it back they had to take it by brute force.
The blackboard was

Articles - A Secret Revealed - The Hutt Street Party! 18th April 2004 By Rich Mills
|
|
For many years I had heard of the myth of the Hutt Street Party.
Spoke in whispers across the Avenues enclave for years, many had heard of it, quite a few had been to one, but still many it seems are in the dark.
Basically it goes like this.. By word of mouth you get to hear about the party, which goes on in the house on Hutt Street. Hence the name!

Articles - A Perspective on Hull By Darren Sant
|
|
I suppose you could call this article a follow to my article entitled Stranger in a Strange Land also on this website.
I wanted to explore my perception of Hull in a stream of consciousness kind of style.
One phrase that springs to mind when thinking of Hull is self-deprecating.
Something I have, rightly, being accused of being myself. Perhaps that is why I have grown to like Hull so much.

Articles Reply to - Woe is Me - I Live in Hull

By Nick Quantrill
After reading the article by Allen Miles on the 'is Hull crap or not?' debate I want to add my views. It's something that has been on my mind recently owing to my girlfriend moving to the city full time. Although I've lived in Hull all my life it's only now that I've really thought about whether or not Hull qualifies as a..

Articles - Woe is Me - I Live in Hull
|
|
By Allen Miles
When you catch a train to hull, something happens that sums up the experience of coming here. The rail stops. It doesn't run through the city like the tracks of so many other towns. It simply comes to an abrupt halt as if to say (in a Vincent Price style voice) "You're here now. WE'VE GOT YOU NOW. HA HA HA HA HA!".

Articles - Hull is Fab and Super

by Suzie Horsington-cum-Scoff
Well I couldn't believe it when I heard that two nasty people had published a book about Hull being a crap town. Which is why I have decided to show my social conscience and write this article.
Apparently it all started with someone called Finlay Cooks-Britain, who is a celebrity chef or something, slagging Hull off as being crap and smelly.
