Haircuts In The Crowd By Mr. Lucifer

If you are becoming bored of the vain, look at me I'm so cool culture that swamps the nationwide indie/rock scene and if you are sick of standing among people with the same haircuts, the same clothes, and the same transfixed miserable look on their faces, then, you are obviously craving exactly what I am from our beloved culture - some fucking originality!

Don't get me wrong, until the day I die I'll always prefer the sound of a guitar-fronted band to that of a pilled-up DJ or a jewellery ridden wannabe gangster singing What's up, yo, got it going on, but recent visits to some local clubs and music venues have made me think a little, with a few exceptions, it's all the fucking same. I was overjoyed when visiting Adelphi the other weekend, as the likes of Park & Ride and Sidewinder have obviously spent more time writing songs and practicing than standing in front of the mirror for hours and making themselves look like clones of their idols.

Without doubt there are a number of good bands in Hull, but do they all need to be tied to the same brush? Does long hair make a band successful? Will making yourself look like every other band in the city get you noticed? All of these are questions I've been asking myself recently, as it's something that is beginning to grate on me.

In my opinion, music is remembered 90% through the ears and 10% through the eyes, so a word of note to some of those bands out there trying to make it big - work on your sound before your look, stop caressing that dead cat on your head, and try and become something that might get you somewhere.... original!
