It's Only A Game By Dave F

Question - What do you call an Englishman in a World Cup Final??? Answer - Referee. Like most people in the country, I'm asking myself why... Why didn't we get through to the final? Why didn't Sven take better strikers? Why??? Actually, I'm asking myself why the England team turn to jelly at the mention of the word Penalty, and why we have to listen to excuses like 'We know we're not playing very well but at least we are winning'.

Hang on a minute... Weren't these players picked because they are the best in the country? If I said to my boss; 'I know I haven't done a very good job but I got it done didn't I?' I'd be out on my arse. How can we justify paying some of these players £150,000 a week when they are not doing their job properly? Then again, they're paid to play, not to win. I think we were destined to lose against Portugal and were lucky to progress as far as we did.

England are a quarter final team who played to their potential and it's only the media and high expectations of the general public that have built them up into something they are not. I'm not saying that 40 years ago was a fluke, every dog has its day and that was ours.

Now it's time to either face reality or find a new national game because we don't seem to be 'good enough' at football, and as a nation we can't seem to handle losing. Maybe if we weren't so fickle, the pressure on the players would be less. Who'd want to take a penalty after Batty was crucified by the media in 1998 for single-handedly losing the game against Argentina? We're looking for heroes but these are only men. Heroes don't weep when they lose and heroes don't make excuses. At least my heroes don't...

We now have 4 years to lower our expectations and maybe next time we can be proud if our country gets through to the quarter finals in a tournament against the best 16 teams in the world, instead of having to take a week off work and seek counselling because we've taken it all a little too seriously. After all, it is only a game...
