Carol Ann Duffy
2pm
Zest Cafe Bar, 17-19 Newland Avenue
£7/£5 concs.
Box Office 01482 226655
Carol Ann Duffy's appointment as Poet Laureate in May 2009 was widely celebrated by readers, academics and critics alike. A street smart poet with a razor-sharp technique, Duffy writes with compassion and elegance about contemporary life, promising to bring something new and genuinely surprising to the role of laureate.
|
Opening the Humber Mouth with this reading, Carol Ann Duffy is a firm favourite with festival audiences, speaking with a voice which is playful and deadly serious; popular yet profound.
Carol Ann Duffy was born in 1955 in Glasgow and read philosophy at Liverpool University. She is a regular reviewer and broadcaster and has written poetry, plays and books for children. She has won many major awards, including the TS Eliot Prize, Whitbread Prize and a Lannan Literary Award. She was awarded an OBE in 1995, a CBE in 2001 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1999.
"Duffy is one of the freshest and bravest talents to emerge in British poetry- any poetry - for years." Eavan Boland, Independent on Sunday

Artist talk by Amelia Crouch
11.30am Ð 12.30pm
Artlink, 87 Princes Avenue, Hull
FREE
Contact Katie Gill for enquiries: 01482 345104, gallery@artlink.uk.net
Leeds based artist Amelia Crouch will be giving a presentation about her work, during which there will be the opportunity for questions and discussion.
|
|
Amelia works variously in video, audio, photographic imagery and painting. Across these media a frequent characteristic of her work is the use of words, either using juxtaposition of images and language, or using words to evoke images.
Amelia is interested in differences in how visual and verbal media address a viewer and in the importance played by representational structures in the creation of self and social identity. Her work attempts to tap into what might be called a 'collective cultural imagery' Ð the associations and mental images that people carry with them already, that they have absorbed from the world around them sometimes unconsciously.
There is no need to book in advance for this talk, suitable for ages 16+

Kate Long
Central Library
1pm
FREE
Join Kate Long to talk about mothers, daughters, husbands, friendships and books in this free lunchtime talk at the Library.
The Bad Mother's Handbook, Kate Long's first novel, was a publishing sensation, telling the stories of three generations of women, their relationships and their struggles with family life.
|
Since then, Kate has written several novels (Queen Mum, Swallowing Grandma, The Daughter Game) which look at the way ordinary working women live their lives and the ties which bind them.
The latest, The Daughter Game, examines how the life of a schoolteacher is turned upside down by her friendship with a pupil. Funny, perceptive and down to earth, Kate Long champions the lives of 'the women who stay put' and has been compared to Kate Atkinson and Marion Keyes.
Recently adapted for TV, The Bad Mother's Handbook starred Catherine Tate and was broadcast on ITV.
'Kate Long's moving and funny novel will have mums and daughters laughing in recognition...It's not quite happy families, but all the more believable for it." Red
