The following information and advice about swine flu has come from Ivan Ellul, Chief Executive, NHS East Riding of Yorkshire, courtesy of Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce.
Pregnant Women
|
|
We have received the following advice from Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Health Authority (SHA) in relation to swine flu and pregnant employees:
Most pregnant women who are diagnosed with swine flu will show the same seasonal symptoms as seasonal flu - headache, cough, sore throat and fever.
As with seasonal flu, it is possible that some women may become very unwell from swine flu.
Any infection in pregnant women can increase the likelihood of complications developing and influenza is no exception. Influenza, on top of the 'stresses and strains' that the body will already be experiencing, particularly in the later term, could cause a greater impact than usual on the mother and baby.
It is very important that any woman who is pregnant and has symptoms of a flu-like illness should get advice from NHS or their doctor as soon as possible. In addition, it is generally agreed that pregnant women are more susceptible to influenza than other women of reproductive age. Therefore pregnant women should not care for patients with symptoms of flu.
Vulnerable groups
In addition to pregnant women, there are several groups of people who are at a higher risk from swine flu, these are;
people with chronic lung disease including people who have had drug treatment for their asthma within the past three years
people with chronic heart disease
people with chronic kidney disease
people with chronic liver disease
people with chronic neurological disease
people with suppressed immune systems (whether caused by disease or treatment)
people with diabetes
people aged 65 years and older
If you are pregnant or belong to one of the above vulnerable groups and believe you may be suffering from
swine flu please do not report for work and contact your doctor by telephone.
Please do not attend your surgery unless requested to do so by your GP.
